Like death and taxes, the “what should we eat” argument is one of life’s great inevitabilities. Millions of Aussies come to Yelp every month to settle this exact debate because Yelp has heaps of reviews, photos, and tips to help the hungry decide where to tuck in for tea.
We didn’t want to be selfish with all this data, so we thought we’d do the dining-out public a solid with our annual list of Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in Australia for 2016.
Bet you’re wondering “How did they put together this delectable directory?” Glad you asked.
Yelp’s data science brainiacs analysed which places were most popular and well reviewed since Yelp launched in Australia in 2011. They compared businesses from across the country using a ranking that considered ratings and number of reviews, while also accounting for quality, popularity, and statistical fluctuations.
The result of all this fancy statistical sleuthing is a list that combines classic favourites with hot, new eateries. Melbourne hot spot Chin Chin has taken out the Number 1 spot in 2016 and last year’s top eatery Mamak still remains a winning choice, coming in at Number 5. The list also shows that Western Australia is one of Australia’s top foodie destinations with four of the top ten eateries and 38 of the top 100 places to eat for 2016 – more than any other state.
Whether you’re looking for a place you and your mates can stuff your faces with dumplings or seeking a suitable cafe to satisfy your smashed avo and caffeine craving, there’s something for every taste and budget on the list.
Does this year’s list have you daydreaming about your next meal opportunity? Or do you disagree with our data? Let us know on Twitter with #YelpAUTop100 or on Facebook. Methodology
Let’s review the nuts and bolts of how this thing got made by Yelp’s data science team, who combed through millions of data points to make it possible for us to share this list with you.
To determine Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in Australia for 2016, we analysed which places were the all-time most popular and well reviewed since Yelp launched in Australia in 2011. Businesses from across the country were compared using a ranking that looks at both the ratings and the number of reviews while accounting for quality, popularity, and statistical fluctuations.
To make sure the list is truly local, only reviews written by Yelpers with their home location in Australia were factored into the ranking. To be included, businesses must primarily be a restaurant or place to eat a meal and abide by Yelp’s Terms of Service and Content Guidelines. Where a business with multiple locations appears more than once on the list, we keep the highest ranked location and mention the others in a footnote.
