Yelp names Black-owned businesses “Ones to Watch” in food, beauty and home for 2022

In June 2020, Yelp answered the call from our users to make it easier to support the Black community. We launched our Black-owned business attribute to help consumers find, connect with and patronize Black-owned businesses. Since its launch, more than 45,000 businesses have self-identified as Black-owned on Yelp, making it easier than ever for consumers to dine and shop with these local businesses.

Over the last year, we’ve seen consumers continue to come to Yelp to find and support Black-owned businesses. In fact, review mentions for Black-owned businesses were up 165% in 2021, compared to 2019. To learn more about how consumers are engaging with Black-owned businesses on Yelp, click here.

In honor of Black History Month, we’ve highlighted standout Black-owned food, beauty and home and decor businesses across the country, found on Yelp. Businesses like Melba’s, a New York restaurant that serves up Southern comfort classics and is beloved by celebrities like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle; or Lady Clipper Barber Shop, a barbershop run entirely by a team of women of color located in Washington DC, where Yelpers rave about the easy booking process and precise cuts. Al-Maktoum Goods in Brooklyn, NY specializes in handmade home goods from West Africa artisans. With this list of beloved Black-run and Black-owned businesses, you will find new favorites to support this month and all year long.To determine the list of Black-owned businesses to watch, our data science team started by identifying businesses that have self-identified with the Black-owned attribute on Yelp in food, beauty or home categories. From the candidate businesses in each category, we limited the list to three businesses per state, and narrowed it down by weighing a variety of factors, including national online presence, average rating and review counts. Businesses featured are listed alphabetically.
