Yelp Celebrates Pride Month with First-Ever Top 20 Most Inclusive Cities

To celebrate Pride Month and the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, Yelp is releasing the first-ever Top 20 Most Inclusive Cities and data mapping the rise of LGBTQ+ friendly businesses across the U.S, along with introducing a free ‘LGBTQ+ Owned Business’ decal.

So how did Yelp’s data science team help pull together our Top 20 Most Inclusive Cities list? We ranked the biggest metro areas in the country by the popularity of the gender neutral restrooms and “Open To All” attributes. For each attribute, we looked at the share it represented of all attributes added to eligible businesses that opened since the attribute was launched. We combined those shares for each attribute into a score by adjusting to make them contribute equally to the ranking. Then we ranked metro areas—core based statistical areas—by the combined score for the two attributes, and used the biggest city in each metro in the rankings. We limited each state to no more than two cities on the list.

We share more about how many businesses have the gender neutral restroom attribute and have opted into the “Open to All” feature in this blog post, as well as information about the free ‘LGBTQ+ Owned Business’ decals we’re offering during the month of June.
