Tips for Creating an Eye-Catching Resume

Sitting down to start drafting your resume can be overwhelming, whether you’re a first-time resume builder or updating one for a new opportunity! It’s intimidating to figure out which pieces of your experience are the most important to include and how to format them, however, building an eye-catching resume is an important step in pursuing your #FiveStarCareer.

Consistent Formatting

Recruiting teams are reviewing dozens of resumes every day, so it’s important that yours is clear, concise, and easy to read when it comes across their desks. Formatting is an important first step to consider when drafting your resume.

There are tons of templates available online, so when trying to narrow it down, remember that simplicity is key. Your experience and story will be the star of the show, and you don’t need to overdo the design. Using bullet points and headings to separate sections and experiences can help keep your content organized and easy to read. However you decide to format your resume, be sure to keep it consistent throughout.

Make Sure Your Content is Relevant to the Role You’re
Applying For

Too much information isn’t always a good thing. For your relevant job experience, try and limit it to around five bullet points per job, and make sure the experience you’re including is relevant to the role you’re applying for. It’s a little extra work to tailor your resume for each job you’re applying for, but it’s a great way for your resume to stand out against other candidates. Take a look at the job description and implement keywords into your own resume based on the role you’re applying for. 

Also, be sure to include specific accomplishments and quantifiable data whenever possible. Transferable skills from previous experiences are also a great way to showcase your experience, but make sure to tie back to how they are applicable to the role you’re applying for.

Proofread Before Submitting Your Application

You’ve been working on your resume for what might seem like an eternity, so it’s tempting to hit submit right when you wrap up your last sentence, but be sure to take another glance (or two) at the content. Making a typo is a simple mistake, but it can make or break a great resume. It is always helpful to run your resume through an online tool or ask a friend to review, as they can often catch any mistakes you may have missed. It’s also helpful to have a fresh perspective to make sure what makes sense to you also makes sense to someone else reading your resume. Be sure to also double check your contact information and ensure that it is up to date.
