Say hello to Cullen B, an Enterprise Account Executive on our Enterprise Sales Team! Cullen recently celebrated his Yelpiversary. When he was growing up, he had a competitive spirit, so when it was time to find a career, sales seemed like a perfect fit. He loves that at Yelp he can be an individual contributor and still be a part of a greater team full of folks who are all looking to achieve similar goals.
Let’s jump into his #FiveStarCareer story.
What is your advice to someone interested in sales?
Going into sales, it’s important to develop an approach that works for you. Ask for advice from top sellers, listen more than you speak (I struggle with this), have a mentor, and at the end of the day, keep things light and fun as sales can be challenging!
Why did you want to work at Yelp?
I wanted to work at Yelp because its culture is tremendous! Additionally, during my interview, I got the sense that I was joining a team of smart, talented, and passionate sales leaders. It’s so important to surround yourself with great people to set yourself up for success!
What does a typical day look like in your role?
I have two kids so my day starts much earlier than most. I try to wake up before them so I have a couple of quiet moments for coffee, meditation, prayer, or good music (sometimes I need all four). This helps me reset and set the tone for the day. After I get my kids to school, I like to change my work setting by going to a new coffee shop or posting up in a different spot in my house. I crank out as much outreach as I can before noon as I typically schedule meetings and follow-ups in the afternoon. The end of the day is spent organizing my to-do list, making sure emails have been addressed, and preparing for the next few days.
How do you stay motivated to hit your goals when you’re having a tough day?
Attitude is everything. I recently had to overcome a really tough challenge. My manager asked me how I was able to move on so quickly, and I told her you never know if that next call or email could be a major deal that will make your year. If I had a bad attitude, that would be another lost sale. Attitude is something you can control.
How does Yelp support your work-life balance?
This is one of the things I truly love about Yelp! We’re always encouraged to take the time we need and are never questioned if we take a mental health day. Yelp makes me feel appreciated and allows a healthy work-life balance, making me want to work harder.
How does your manager remind you that your work is valued?
In a world of remote work life, communication is key. My past and current managers, leadership, and even coworkers all make recognition a priority. This is typically done through messaging, emails, and team meetings.
Tell us something you learned from the Yelp Sales Development Program that made you a better salesperson
Before Yelp, I had never sold paid search/ads, so even after three years in my role, I find every new learning opportunity and training session to be valuable. The investment Yelp makes into the Sales Development Program certainly makes you feel appreciated! I learn something new every day, ultimately leading to greater and greater success throughout my career.
Tell us about a community that you are proud to be a part of at Yelp
At the start of the pandemic, I really enjoyed being part of the YelpParents group! At the time, parents needed a place to share stories, vent, and talk about their struggles. For parents out there, they all know the struggle was real, so having this group to share struggles with was a really helpful option that Yelp gave.
