Sam M is a Midmarket Client Partner on our Midmarket Sales team, and he recently celebrated his 7th year at Yelp! To celebrate, he is sharing an inside look at what his life at Yelp has looked like over the last seven years.
How did you know you wanted to pursue a job in sales?
I didn’t always know that my career would go down the sales path. Instead, I knew I was good at writing and conversation, as I could engage most people when speaking with them and loved finding creative ways to solve problems.
What is your advice to someone interested in sales?
Sales gives you an insatiable thirst in the best way. There’s no “top” so you can always continue to improve, learn, and hit new sales goals. If that fits you, this role is perfect.
Why did you want to work at Yelp?
I wanted to work for a company that takes care of its employees first and is forward-looking. Yelp has held its company values and mission since it was founded in 2004, and I haven’t seen that change in the time I’ve been here. I’ve never questioned the direction of the company nor its commitment to its employees. After seven years, I’m happy to still be here and work for a company as consistent as Yelp!
What does a typical day look like in your role?
As a Midmarket Client Partner, I manage the success, reporting, and optimizations of current advertisers in the Midmarket Segment. I have a book of clients, some of which have advertised with us for years and others who have recently begun their ads experience. I work with business owners and their marketing teams in both a retention and growth capacity. Over time, we build personal and professional relationships to really get to know our clients beyond their businesses. Ultimately, I work to holistically help business owners grow their business utilizing our ads services.
How do you stay motivated to hit your goals when you’re having a tough day?
After seven years and a few different roles at the company, I’ve built up a strong mindset around what success and failure look like, and I know I’m in control of how I react. This growth mindset ultimately keeps me motivated to hit my goals no matter the circumstances.
How does Yelp support your work-life balance?
Yelp puts me first. It all started with the decision to embrace a remote-first policy and has continued to make sure our mental health and personal needs are met. Flexibility has been key, and Yelp makes it happen.
How does your manager remind you that your work is valued?
Leadership is always prompt to praise our work in various mediums: video calls for personal praise, praise in team chats, and emails to the entire department from several members of the leadership team.
Tell us something you learned from the Yelp Sales Development Program that made you a better salesperson
I’ve learned to listen more than I speak. Especially in my role now, all business owners want to be successful, looking for new ways to grow their consumer base and revenue. Asking questions to find those solutions for business owners have helped me to ultimately be a better salesperson.
