Meet Rachel, an Emerging Enterprise Account Director on our Enterprise Sales team. Rachel has been at Yelp for over eight years, and she is sharing a look into what her #LifeAtYelp has been like so far.
Tell us about your journey at Yelp
I met some folks from Yelp at my college career fair during my senior year. Despite never having been to New York City before, I loved the idea of working at a tech company like Yelp. I started as an Account Executive on Yelp’s Local Sales team in August 2014 in the NYC office. Three and a half years later, I had the opportunity to be on the landing team for our Washington D.C. office. Later, I joined our Midmarket Sales team where I worked for two years before landing my current role on the Enterprise Sales team. Working in Enterprise means that I work with brands on a national scale.
What has kept you at Yelp over the last 8 years?
There is no shortage of opportunity at Yelp as long as you seek it and work for it. Every year has felt like a new adventure!
Tell us about the moment that you knew you had found a long-term career at Yelp
Honestly, I’ve had a lot of these moments. One in particular that comes to mind was during our first month in the D.C. office. It was January, but the office was still so new that the heat wasn’t even turned on yet. We were all walking around on our calls wearing big puffy jackets! It was hilarious, and I remember thinking to myself, ‘Wow. This is the best place ever. These people are in it to win it.’
How have your leaders supported and continue to support your growth?
The leadership at Yelp is top-notch. I have had managers and directors who have turned into lifelong mentors. On top of that, the team environment has always felt collaborative, and we are always cheering for our teammates. I have been fortunate enough to work with people who genuinely want what is best for their colleagues. We all recognize that our mutual success is what is best for Yelp.
What has been your biggest lesson or takeaway after the last 8 years?
Being good at what you do takes time and hard work. It’s easy to fall into the mindset where you crave instant success, but your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Sometimes it takes failing at something to eventually succeed at it.
What parts of your work help you to feel fulfilled?
I love selling a product that I use and believe in. I use Yelp all the time to find different restaurants, but I also use the platform to help me make other big decisions in my life. I have used it to find things like a physical therapist or cross-country movers. It’s fun to be able to sell a product that I love and use myself, and it is something that fuels me.
How would you describe Yelp’s culture?
There are two things I have learned about culture during my time at Yelp. The first is that culture is a group effort, and the second is that culture has to be authentic. At Yelp, our environment is full of positivity because it’s a place where employees genuinely want to be.
What is something that surprised you about working at Yelp?
I never anticipated the friendships I would form through work. I have met some of my best friends here, and I am beyond grateful for that.
