Mohamed’s 5-star career in tech

Meet Mohamed T, a Software Engineer on our Engineering – Connectors team at Yelp! Mohamed is celebrating his first Yelpiversary, and to celebrate, he is sharing what inspired him to pursue a tech career, why he chose Yelp, and more.

Why did you want to work at Yelp?

In my home country, Tunisia, we lack an authentic business review platform. I strongly related to Yelp’s mission, so I jumped on the opportunity to work here when it presented itself. Since my first interview at Yelp, I could tell that Yelp really puts its employees first, so much so that I thought it had to be too good to be true! But sure enough, after one year of working with this amazing group of people, it still feels too good, but it’s very much all true!

What inspired you to pursue a career in tech?

I always loved investigating and solving problems as a child. I would go into my father’s workshop and start building anything that would come to mind. However, I always felt limited in what I could build. When I discovered tech, everything completely changed for me. I no longer felt like there were limitations. Everything I can imagine, I can build. I knew this was the career I had to pursue.

What does a typical day look like in your role?

I start my day by virtually greeting my team and checking my email and calendar. The morning is when I am most focused, so I try to progress in my current tasks during that time. I typically then take my lunch break with my partner – she is the best cook around! After my midday pick-me-up, my afternoons usually have a few meetings in them – except for Wednesdays. Wednesday is our no-meetings day.

What do you enjoy most about working from home?

I enjoy spending more time with my partner and having our daily meals together. I have a history of back pain, and avoiding the daily commute with a backpack has helped my physical and mental health.

How does Yelp support your work-life balance?

When we have an incident we need to fix, you will find engineers focused on solving the problem, and managers and leaders focused on their team’s health, reminding everyone to hit the breaks and take time to rest. Whether I want to exercise, play music, or do anything toward my wellbeing, I don’t have to worry about costs because Yelp offers us a wellness reimbursement program.
