Meet Shuting, an Engineering Manager on our Engineering – Model Platform team. Shuting is celebrating her fourth year at Yelp, and today, she is sharing how she got started working in tech, what a typical day looks like as an engineering manager, and more!
What inspired you to pursue a career in tech?
After learning programming and software development in school, I thought it was so cool that I now understand how every application around me is built. Working in tech means I have the opportunity to contribute to the products that I use daily and the products that may help improve other people’s lives. Being able to visualize the work I have done motivates me daily.
Tell us about a project that you are proud to have worked on
When I was an individual contributor, I worked on a project to build centralized model training and serve platform support for all Machine Learning users at Yelp. This provides a seamless model deployment pipeline that guarantees the prediction parity between training time and serving time. This project built up the core skeleton for all the products we own on the Model Platform team nowadays.
How does Yelp support your work-life balance?
At Yelp, we value work-life balance a lot. I realized this during my first few weeks on the team. As a new hire to the company at that time, I tried to ramp up myself fast and did some code pushes during the night. The next day my mentor and manager came to me and checked to make sure everything was alright. They didn’t want me to feel over-stressed or that I needed to work past my normal hours. Since we work remotely and across different timezones, we respect everyone’s working hours. We encourage everyone to mute chat notifications during off time.
