Meet Shanley, Senior Elite Account Director

Meet Shanley M, a Senior Elite Account Director on our Local Sales team. Shanley and her team are responsible for introducing Yelp to local businesses and explaining how our products can help business owners achieve their goals. Shanley is celebrating her 4th Yelpiversary!

How did you know that you wanted to pursue a job in sales?

When I was growing up, I would sell anything and everything that I thought I could make a return on. Right before I applied to work at Yelp, I sold my beat-up car for a decent sum of money, even though everyone told me I should just give it away. I knew right then that I was truly made for sales.

What is your advice to someone who is interested in sales?

Sales is a place where you can be your authentic self and really let your personality shine through. Don’t try to be anyone else other than yourself. Business owners are not only buying the product you’re selling, but they’re also buying from you.

Why did you want to work at Yelp?

I used Yelp for about eight years before I applied here. I was excited to work at Yelp because I knew the product worked, and it was a widely known and respected company.

What do you enjoy most about working from home?

I love the fact that I no longer have to commute. It allows me to spend more time with my family and save money as well. As someone with severe anxiety, working from home alleviates some of the pressure that being in an office can cause. I have also sold more while working from home than I did in an office.

How do you stay motivated to hit your goals?

At the end of the day, I know I want to provide for my family, so that is my number one goal. Through my career here at Yelp, I was able to buy my first home. That was my number one goal when I started my position here.

Tell us something you learned from the Yelp Sales Development Program that made you a better salesperson

I learned that it’s okay to be my quirky, and sometimes awkward self, and business owners actually appreciate it when I’m being my authentic self.

How does your manager or Yelp’s leadership let you know that your work is valued?

By giving me a shout-out, praising me, and acknowledging what I do both individually and for my team.
