Meet Rishabh, Software Engineer, Engineering – Design Systems

Say hello to Rishabh, a Software Engineer on our Engineering – Design Systems team! Rishabh has been on our team for over 5 years. His team makes our Product teams’ day-to-day work a little more enjoyable by providing easy-to-use component libraries, processes, and tools that help them ship accessible, maintainable, and good looking products more efficiently. They guide the look and feel of Yelp products. Fun fact: Rishabh’s team is distributed across three countries and four time zones!

Tell us about your journey at Yelp

I’ve had an interesting 5-year journey at Yelp, spanning six teams and two countries! I started off on the Webcore team based in San Francisco, where I spent a year working on web infrastructure. After that, I moved to the Business Money team for about six months, building features for the Yelp for Business product. After that, I moved to a Yelp for Business team, building ad customization products. Later on, I moved to another Yelp for Business team in Hamburg, Germany, and led the migration of our “Business Claim Flow” and “Login & Signup Flows” to the latest tech stack. Now, I’ve joined the Design Systems team to lead the efforts for improving accessibility across all of Yelp.

What’s the most rewarding thing about working at Yelp?

Despite being here for over five years, I still feel like there’s still so much room to learn and grow as an engineer. On each of the teams that I’ve been on, I’ve always had the opportunity to explore something new. The engineering teams truly care about software quality and developing software in a sustainable way.

What happened during your best day at work?

Ask an engineer about their best day at work, and I’ll bet you that they’ll say that it’s the day they spent solving an engineering problem! I’m no exception. The most recent one that I can recall is when I improved the accessibility of our 5-star Rating Selector React component to be fully keyboard-accessible. I wrote unit tests using React Testing Library keeping accessibility in mind and really enjoyed it.

What do you enjoy most about working from home?

Working from home gives me the flexibility to work at my own schedule. I’m no longer limited to working in a 9-to-5 stretch. I have the flexibility to slice and dice my working schedule as I see fit.

What’s something that can only happen here?

It’s only here that a great product, smart engineers, supportive management, visionary product leadership, and caring teammates come together to create something meaningful and useful to the community: Yelp.
