Meet Nico, Online Community Ambassador

Meet Nico, an Online Community Ambassador on our Community Management team! Nico recently celebrated his first Yelpiversary. When looking back on his first year at Yelp, Nico recalls, “From day one, I have felt like I truly belong here at Yelp thanks to the support of my managers and the camaraderie of my teammates.”

What does a typical day look like in your role?

My role is all about exploring my community and developing relationships with Yelp users. I research current events, local celebrations, and new businesses in the community, and then I craft messaging to continue engagement and recruit new members of the Elite squad. I love working at a remote-first workplace because it allows me to get out into the community more than I ever have. You might find me working at a coffee shop one day or a botanical garden the next. How cool is that?

What is your favorite part of your role?

I love building long-term relationships with Yelp users. I see my role as a cheerleader of sorts, encouraging our users to give their best when supporting local businesses. I’ve watched reviewers grow as writers, and I’ve seen self-ascribed homebodies become more social and explore their communities more. It’s very rewarding to play a role in someone’s personal development and to be an ongoing source of encouragement for them.

What is your #1 tip for staying productive while working from home?

Consistency helps me stay productive as a remote worker. I use the Pomodoro Method, working in 25-minute stretches with occasional 5-minute breaks to clear my mind and stretch. Depending upon where I am working on any given day, I can take a quick walk or catch up on the news. This routine helps me stay engaged and focused throughout the day and gives me satisfaction in knowing I was productive.

How does Yelp support your work-life balance?

My managers have been incredibly supportive and understanding of any personal issues I’ve encountered that may interfere with work, and their flexibility and encouragement have been life-changing. I’ve never experienced this kind of inspirational leadership in any positions I held before Yelp.

How does your manager or Yelp’s leadership let you know that your work is valued?

My managers are very consistent in their praise and guidance. I appreciate the regular 1:1s with leaders and consistent efforts to evaluate my work. I am never left feeling uncertain about the work I am doing or whether I am meeting expectations in my role.

What motivates you every day?

I love the camaraderie I have with the rest of the Community team, specifically my fellow Online Community Ambassadors. Our tight-knit team offers regular check-ins and encouragement of one another through Yelp Love messages, group chat, or “compliments” on our reviews. This source of positivity motivates me to stay connected and always do my best.
