Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a Community Manager for Yelp? Today, Meg B, Senior Community Manager of @YelpOmaha, is sharing a behind the scenes look into being on our Community team!
Tell us about your journey at Yelp
It all started in May 2017. I worked full-time at an e-commerce site and saw a part-time internship position to help assist with Yelp Community Events. I met with the Omaha Community Manager and based on my enthusiasm to get involved with Yelp and our city’s happenings, I got the job! I worked part-time as an intern for six months, then moved on to Marketing Assistant to the Community Manager where I took on more hours and more responsibilities working on Local Yelp, growing the Yelp Omaha Instagram handle, and organizing Elite and Community events. In 2019, I moved from my other roles into the full-time Community Manager position when it opened.
What does a typical day look like in your role?
Everyday I am reaching out to Yelpers who are writing more often and encouraging them to join the Yelp Elite Squad. I also spend time complimenting current Yelp Elite reviews. I set up meetings with business owners to educate them on Yelp tools or set up marketing-style Yelp Elite or Community Events to raise Yelp awareness. I also mentor two other Community Managers and work through any issues or new campaigns we’re working on as a department. Some days, I’m busy setting up and hosting Elite Events.
What is your favorite part of your role?
We wear four hats in our role, and my favorite hat is to be a community builder. We do this through our events and on-site work. But really, my favorite part is meeting with business owners to set up marketing events. I get to share the amazing benefits of working with Yelp and then execute 5-star experiences for Elites and Yelpers and bring people together. Regularly I hear heartwarming stories of how being a Yelp Elite or attending an event positively impacted a person’s life. Feeling like I’ve created an environment for inclusion and belonging, all while supporting local businesses, is the cherry on top of an awesome job.
What do you enjoy most about working from home?
This role is designed to be remote so we can be accessible to business owners and our community. I love being able to create my schedule, which includes blocking out time for meetings, on-site work, event setup, and other things I wouldn’t be able to do in an office environment. There is always something to do, so it’s easy to be productive and stay on track.
How does Yelp support your work-life balance?
I have two young children, and Yelp has been so supportive by allowing me to have a flexible schedule to meet their needs, especially during the height of the pandemic. I utilize wellness days and PTO when things come up. I have an open line of communication with my Regional Leader, who helps lift any burden to help us avoid burnout.
How does your manager remind you that your work is valued?
I am lucky to have a manager who takes time daily to praise our team. There is a wonderful balance between a manager who is attentive to what I’m working on and giving me full autonomy. She’s around if I need anything and is the first to offer help or advice when needed.
What motivates you every day?
I love that I never have the same day twice. I am excited to keep my Yelp Elite Squad growing. I am motivated by each new Instagram follower, new partnership, and seeing what my colleagues are doing in their respective cities and implementing it into my day-to-day work.
Tell us about a community that you are proud to be a part of at Yelp
I am a part of the YelpParents community. Over the last few years, I have felt really seen and supported. There are so many resources for me. It’s a wonderful part of the company.
