Meet Jimmy, an Associate Director on our Local Sales team! Jimmy has been on our team for the last eight years. As an Associate Director, his typical day includes supporting his managers by providing feedback and guidance based on observations throughout the day, while making sure he is messaging and achieving our organization’s priorities. No one day is the same, which is what he enjoys most about the role. Typically, there is a balance of administrative work, coaching activities, 1:1s, and observation activities.
Why did you pursue a career in sales?
I decided on sales when I realized what skills I could build by becoming a salesperson. When I applied to Yelp, I had a pretty good understanding of what my strengths were, but I was someone who wanted to learn how to be more assertive and persuasive. I knew that working in sales would help me improve on those skills.
What is your advice to someone interested in sales?
Being in sales will allow you to build the skills necessary for a successful professional and personal life. I see sales as effectively communicating a point to persuade someone to see something the same way you see it. While the professional benefits of being in sales are endless, the personal benefits are also infinite. I can’t even begin to think of how many situations I’ve been in outside of a professional setting where the skills I developed through sales helped me navigate that situation.
Why did you want to work at Yelp?
There were two main reasons. One was the culture. I remember hearing such amazing things from so many people about what Yelp had to offer from a workplace culture perspective. I didn’t realize what a strong impact workplace culture would have on me until I joined. The second was the product. My mom, friends, and I had all used Yelp for a while before I began working here. I remember telling my friends I applied to work at Yelp, and they all said, “That’s awesome. I love using Yelp!”
What do you enjoy most about working from home and how do you stay productive?
Not having to wear shoes! Just kidding, although that is a great perk. Not having to commute gives me time back in my day and allows me to spend more time with my wife and dog.
How do you stay motivated to hit your goals each month?
I write down my goals for the day every day on a piece of paper along with some affirmations in order to remind me of what I want to accomplish in a day. Whenever I have a rough day, I take a few minutes to get away from the computer and go outside. Whenever I come back inside, I review my goals for the day to determine whether or not I am doing the activities necessary to reach my goals. Once I have fully reset, I get back to work.
