Say hello to Kate, a Manager on our Midmarket Sales team. Kate began her #FiveStarCareer eight years ago as an Account Executive on our Local Sales team, where she discovered her passion for leadership. Take a look as Kate shares a look into her journey, her advice for finding success in sales, and more.
How did you know that you wanted to pursue a job in sales?
I didn’t always know I wanted to work in sales. When I was a senior in college at Indiana University, I met a Yelp representative at a career fair on a whim! I used Yelp regularly and was excited to talk with a company whose product I actually used. The rest is history, and here I am eight years later with so much sales and management experience, countless memories, friendships, and career advancements!
What is your advice to someone interested in sales?
Sales can be really hard, but it is also really fulfilling. Don’t give up! Listen to your managers, leaders, and successful peers, and trust the process along the way.
Tell us about your journey at Yelp
My Yelp journey began in January 2015. I was in the first training class as an Account Executive in the Chicago office. I sold ad space to local business owners for about a year and a half and then moved into a leadership position.
Being a Local Sales Manager at Yelp is where I found my stride. I realized leadership aligns with my skill set, and it was so fulfilling. I moved into a Midmarket leadership position in the Chicago office in October 2018, and I have been in this role ever since. Now working remotely, I have the opportunity to work with an amazing team of folks from all over the country.
What does a typical day look like in your role?
Each day starts the same with breakfast, coffee, replying to emails, and mapping out my calendar. From there, it varies! Most of my days consist of internal meetings with my team members, team meetings, client calls, and doing some admin work. I will check over sales decks, prep for client calls, and forecast revenue.
How do you stay motivated to hit your goals during a tough day?
No matter what type of sales or role you are in, there will be tough days, tough meetings, and tough calls. I try to disconnect at night and maintain a healthy work-life balance. That way, I have some time to step away each day and then start fresh the next.
Tell us something you learned from the Yelp Sales Development Program that made you a better salesperson
In sales and leadership, I always try to be extremely curious. I have learned to ask a lot of questions, listen, and observe. There is always something you can learn or improve upon at every point in your career, and everyone has something different to bring to the table.
How does Yelp support your work-life balance?
Work-life balance is so important, and it’s even more important when we’re living in a remote world. When you work, sleep, eat, and relax all in the same place, the lines can get blurred. Yelp does a great job at encouraging its employees to truly disconnect during time off. At night, on the weekend, and when I am taking PTO, I have no problem switching gears to my personal life. As long as you’re dialed in during your work week, you’ll never fall behind.
How does your manager or Yelp’s leadership let you know that your work is valued?
Open communication! I talk to my director regularly in 1:1s, leadership meetings, and over Slack. It’s especially important to feel connected and valued in a fully remote world.
