This week we are celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr. A man who stood for peace, unity, and justice for all Americans regardless of ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. For the second year in a row, we marched in unity with other companies in San Francisco to commemorate the crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. As this holiday marks a new year of cultural celebrations, we’re taking a moment to look back on all the success we’ve had in 2017.
At Yelp, our DiverseBurst employee resource group works throughout the year to celebrate multicultural and multiethnic backgrounds and provide spaces for cultural understanding and exchange. We have a lot to reflect on in the past year including reaching important milestones as an employee group. We’ve partnered with Airbnb, LinkedIn and Lyft on the celebration of Juneteenth, we highlighted a few of our own employees in a video about Ramadan along with an afternoon cultural exchange, and later held a trivia night to learn more about Hispanic culture during Hispanic Heritage month.
Not only did we celebrate these special occasions, we also worked together to bring diverse students of all ages (elementary through college) to share what a day in the life is like for a Yelp employee. We also heard from Martha Hernandez of madeBOS on how we could make clear and actionable professional development self-driven goals.
To cap off the year, a number of us attended AfroTech where we heard from the inspiring first African-American Commissioner of the FCC, Mignon Clybourn, about her thoughts and call to action surrounding Net Neutrality. At this conference, we learned more about new black-owned/developed apps like Scholly and Blebrity which help funnel resources into our community and serve an everyday purpose similar to Yelp.
That’s just a small snapshot and there’s even more to look forward to as we kick-off 2018. Join us as we keep the celebrations and learning going!
