Meet Diana C., a Junior Account Executive based in Yelp Headquarters. This Bay Area native started off as a professional cheerleader and is bringing that bold energy straight to the Yelp Sales Team. Whether she is closing deals or cheering on a teammate to do the same, this little lady is a force to be reckoned with. Read on to find out why she hung up her pom-poms and picked up the phone at Yelp!
What did you do before coming to Yelp?
I cheered for the Oakland Raiders for two years while bartending at an Irish pub in San Francisco because that was the only job I could handle with my hectic schedule. It was hard to have a full time job AND go to charities and fundraisers for the Raiderettes–I was constantly on the go and traveling throughout the community.
How did you first hear about Yelp and the job opening?
A friend of mine from middle school had been posting on his social media that Yelp was hiring. The funny thing is I was going to apply a year earlier but never went through with the application process. I decided that I wouldn’t be able to juggle working a 9-5 job and make it to cheer practice, fundraisers, charities, and game days, so I held off. A year later, I realized I was ready to start my career, so I went online to the Yelp Careers Page to see if they were still hiring, applied, interviewed and was offered the position. I couldn't have been more excited!
What's your title at Yelp and how long have you been with the company?
I started with my training class in January 2013 and I am currently a Junior Account Executive. I finished as the top producer of my rookie class and I’m currently pacing for my next promotion, Account Executive.
What comprises a typical day for you?
I come in, have my coffee and check my email. I usually start by prospecting any new businesses that I am really excited about calling because they’re already getting business from Yelp. From there, I hit the phones and start to fill my calendar up with appointments for the week and call my new leads.
I personally strive to make over 80 calls a day, so that I can reach as many of my potential clients as possible. During these calls, I’m educating business owners on why they should be partnered with Yelp, especially paying attention to their Yelp listing because they already have a presence on the site.
In between my calls, you can find me motivating my teammates by cheering them on. I’m known for always bringing a lot of energy to my team. Every time someone on my floor signs up a new business I am on my feet cheering and clapping for them–must be the Raiderette in me!
Overall, my main goal is to bring as many business owners on board to the Yelp family and keep my team happy and energized.
What's the best part of working for Yelp?
I have learned so many unique skills from the Yelp Training Team. I can take what I’ve learned and apply it to my everyday life. The training here not only teaches you how to speak with business owners about their specific business, but it also helps you communicate efficiently and effectively.
And if that wasn’t enough, I have made great friendships along the way. We’re a family and we enjoy doing things together outside of work. We have a lot of organized activities outside of the office, like a running group and a kickball team, to name a couple. I love hitting the gym with my coworkers, not only do we motivate each other at work, but we bring that same energy to the weight room too!
What is your favorite perk at Yelp?
My favorite perk is obviously the gym subsidy–I’m getting paid to do something I love and then on top of that, they make it easy for us to be fit too!
What has been your favorite memory at Yelp?
The memory that most sticks out is when I closed the deal that booked my seat to Presidents Club. Presidents Club is a trip to Mexico, fully paid for by Yelp, for all the top producers within the organization. It took consistent hard work over the course of five months in order to earn a spot on the trip. It just goes to show that you get what you put into it!
