Say “Hola” to the lovely Lucia G., one of our Spanish Market Account Executives! Lucia has held many jobs in her short time in the job market but quickly fell in love with sales at Yelp. With a smile on her face, Lucia shares with you her passion for working hard and Yelp’s mission.
What did you do before coming to Yelp?
I started out as a journalist in Madrid, working for national TV and radio, which was really fun. Then I switched my career and worked on the marketing team for a innovation-assisting finance company. That's when my sales career started.
How did you first hear about Yelp and the job opening?
The first time that I heard about Yelp was in Puerto Rico because I was studying there in the University, and all my friends used it. I instantly fell in love with the idea of Yelp. My best friend in London told me that the UK office was looking for a new Account Executive for the Spanish team and I couldn't wait to apply for the job!
What's your title at Yelp and how long have you been with the company?
I started to work for Yelp in the London office in March 2013. I’m currently an Account Executive on the Spanish Team.
What comprises a typical day for you?
I arrive to the office and check my emails and review the important appointments that I've set during the day. After that, I hit the phones. Oh, and smile, all the time! I spend pretty much my entire day getting people excited about Yelp. My favorite part of the call is talking to business owners about their Yelp page and helping them utilize their free tools.
What's the best part of working for Yelp?
The atmosphere in the office. The people are really nice, smart, and funny. It’s easier to work every day with that positive energy because you have to work hard if you want to do a good job. Also, I learn more every day about online advertising, which is great as I'm very passionate about the online world.
But the best part of working on Yelp is when you are closing a deal and say to the business owner, “Welcome to Yelp!”
What is your favorite perk at Yelp?
Besides working in the center of London, (I really love this city) I feel that every single day is going to be different because you never know what is going to happen in the office! Sometimes the managers organize games to motivate their teams, hang funny stuff on the walls, once a month is the denim day, or the sports day, not to mention the happy hour on Friday and of course, the best part of all is hitting the gong every time you close a deal! The whole team goes with you and it’s an exciting moment for everybody in the office!
What has been your favorite memory at Yelp?
The first time I closed a deal. It was 3 weeks after starting, and the whole office applauded and congratulated me. It was a really exciting moment because I really felt that I was a part of the company. It made me feel alive!
What separates Yelp from other places you've worked?
The passion with which Yelp helps people find great local businesses and the constant changes they make in order to improve the website. Also they do care about the employees and you can feel they want to make you feel good about doing your job. Another thing, and really important, is to work every month in order to achieve a goal because you strive to improve. It's cool to know how far you can go when working hard, and Yelp gives you the motivation you need for it.
Finally, what would be your one piece of advice for someone interested in your role?
Think that you can get as far as you want, if you work hard, if you want to reach your goals, if you are positive… you can achieve anything and Yelp will give you the chance to grow together!
