This week, OUTburst, our LGBT+ Employee Resource Group invited California State Senator Scott Wiener to Yelp HQ to meet employees and discuss legislation he is proposing.
Senator Scott Wiener was elected this past November to the California State Senate, representing District 11, which includes San Francisco, Colma, Daly City, and portions of South San Francisco. Prior to joining the state senate, Wiener served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He has been a resident of San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood for 20 years and proudly represents the LGBT community.
In a fireside chat with Rachel Williams, Yelp’s Head of Diversity & Inclusion, the senator shared some insights about current issues facing the state and his work, including the following:
- Addressing the shortage of housing, especially affordable housing, across the state and San Francisco specifically
- His proposed legislation to allow individual municipalities to extend alcohol service times until 4am
- Investment in renewable energy and California’s high-speed rail project
- Representing the LGBT community in the current national political climate.
Senator Wiener invited anyone who is interested in becoming more involved to contact him directly: “I answer everything on social media,” he said. He maintains an active presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Medium.
