With her degree fresh off the press from Chico State University, Angelina joined the Yelp Sales team as an account executive in February of 2016. In college, Angelina always sought new adventures and opportunities to learn and grow her skills. Now, her positivity and relentless optimism has led to her success at Yelp, continuously surpassing her quota month after month.
As a Bay Area native, Angelina is no stranger to hustle. Read on to learn how this local is succeeding at Yelp in San Francisco.
What drew you to a job at Yelp initially?
The first Yelployees I met were at the Chico State Career Fair. Both of the people I talked to had amazing things to say about the sales training program, growth opportunities and work environment. One of my friends started working at Yelp when I went to study abroad in Spain, so I asked for her honest opinion of the role. I felt like I could handle everything she shared with me so I asked her to refer me and here I am!
What is a typical day in the office like for you?
Every day is different based on the people I talk to. Some days I have a stacked calendar with pitches from beginning to end, others I’ll have nothing set up for the day so I challenge myself to make opportunities happen and still have a productive day! The basics: make a high-volume of calls and pitch to as many business owners as possible.
What makes your job exciting?
Honestly, I love the energy from my colleagues on the sales floor! It gets me pumped to see other people buzzing with energy. The atmosphere is the most unique part about Yelp that I don’t think other companies can recreate. When I see my team killing it at pitching businesses and hitting the gong, it’s a constant reminder to make sure I am contributing and doing my part for the team.
How does this job fit your skill set and what are you most excited about as you continue to grow in your role and at Yelp?
I can get along with anyone. Definitely helps when business owners open up to me about who they are on a personal level so we can dive into how we can help grow their business. I love that Yelp is always trying to top itself by adding cool new features! Then we have to tweak how we talk to business owners by letting them know why these new features matter for them. Also that we show no sign of slowing down with our new office opening up in DC! It’s cool being in SF where it all started in 2004 and to see how much we’ve grown and will continue to grow in the future.
Where do you find a sense of community at Yelp?
I find community within my team and with our internal Yelp groups. My team and I are really close. We not only work together all week, but after work you can likely find us getting tacos and enjoying a good happy hour. Getting to know each other outside of work helps our team do our best when we are at work. I got really lucky to have a team that is always there for me.
I love our Yelp groups! I’m in two: WAY (Women At Yelp) and Meditation. Meeting with like minded people who are eager to learn from our peers and continuously bettering ourselves through workshops and mindfulness. For example WAY hosts fireside chats with female leaders to give their advice as women in tech and how they navigated their current career path. A favorite event of mine was a public speaking workshop with Amy Wong. It was fun, engaging and we learned how to speak so people will listen. Our meditation group meets every Friday to discuss how we can achieve our own definition of happiness and practices we use to be the best versions of ourselves. Learning how to manage stress in a sales environment has been really helpful.
What are you up to when you’re not at work?
Family and friends are most important to me. I’m lucky to have my family out here in the San Francisco Bay Area so I spend a lot of time with my siblings and cousins! Having my family close is a big reason why I chose to work at the San Francisco office; every weekend we have a birthday party, baby shower, or holiday to celebrate together. My brother is the musician of the family, so you can often catch me going to his shows and supporting his band. I’m also lucky enough to call my sister one of my best friends. She goes to Chico State (which makes me a very happy big sister), so when she’s in town we make sure to grab sushi and a movie. Since I helped raise them, it’s awesome seeing them evolve into young adults who have their own passions!
