Kansas City Yelpers Do The Monster Mash at Yelp’s Chiller Theatre

Halloween tricks and treats got started early in KC this past Wednesday night at Yelp's Chiller Theatre at Foundation Architectural Reclamation & Events Gallery! Our second major open Yelper Event brought out locals in their finest fright night fancy. Even those who didn't come decked out in full zombie coutour or Franken- chic got so in the spirit of things, they had one of four make-up/hair artists gruesome and gorgeous them up, including Pigment Pie, Red Circle and Skyline Downtown Salon.

In our eerie entryway (darkly decked out to the nines thanks to decor master, Marc Manley/Bohemia 360), yelpers met and mingled (though some of us were quite unrecognizable) and visited our charity for the night, Save, Inc, who "provide comprehensive housing solutions to empower socially and medically disadvantaged people to improve their health and lead stable lives with personal dignity." You're encouraged visit the site to learn more and donate for this worthy cause! 

 
Speaking of tricks to get the crowd in the spirit of things, the Dead Girls got things rolling like mad on the dance floor where The Real DJ Steve got the monster mash started and going strong throughout the night. Voler performed frightening feats in the air on silks and hoops and nets, instilling much fear and admiration in us!

A Halloween party calls for treats of gore… uh make that treats galore and our restaurant/catering sponsors offered up the eektastic eats. Shining Stars Catering had a most delightfully gory array of bites that had us screaming… for more! Check out a sample of their maniacal menu: Batwings, Monster Meatballs, a Witches' Brew of butternut squash soup with ginger creme fraiche, Blood Shot Eyes (Deviled eggs make for delicious eyes), and Frankenstein's Fingers (goat cheese in the shape of fingers with sun dried tomato pesto and almond fingernails). Nica's 320 blew us away with their famous mac & cheese (those were candied jalapeños in there, not brains!). Spicing and saucing things up, there were burnt ends and beans from Zarda. Original Juan Specialty Foods' hot sauces and nachos gave new meaning to their "pain is good" slogan.

Halloween and sweets go together like Morticia and Gomez and Chiller Theatre's sweet sponsors had us all feeling like we were little kids again. There were cake pops and all kinds of creative ghoulish treats from Little Lulu's Confections, colorful cookies from Swoon Cookie Crafters, vegan and gluten-free treats from Mudpie Vegan Bakery & Coffeehouse, mini cupcakes from Smallcakes, seasonal gelato (mmm, pumpkin!) from Spin!, and many a yelper appreciated the CoffeecakeKC truck for providing coffee and other goodies for the hearse ride home!

Spooky concoctions were poured by 360 Beverages and Intoxicologist Extraordinaire, Beau Erdman from Nica's 320 (the Jack O' lantern made with pumpkin and cream was a huge hit!) with potent potions provided by our sponsors: High Plains Distillery/Most Wanted, Bacardi Oakheart, and Samogon. PBR and Crispin Cider provided quite witchy brews (no cauldron needed). Our friends at Most Wanted served up many a stiff one with names like the Corpse Reviver and Apple Pie Bourbon.

Proving that all manners of monster and ghost can be captured on film, M&E Photo Studio and ShutterBooth provided spooky photo booths (check out the eerie results at the M&E Gallery and on the Shutterbooth gallery). Monica Cole and Daniel Hu were lurking around taking candid crowd shots. There were games and a costume prize from The Boulevard Apartments

As Demesha W puts it in her review, "I'm so glad I found Yelp and hope to get connected with more events because there are so many neat businesses in our city that I would'nt have even known about if it weren't for this event."
