Last night Yelpers and guests were among the first people in
the world to view one of the most anticipated art shows of 2013: “Deadwood”,
the new exhibition by Johnny Romeo. NG Art Gallery in the beating heart of
Sydney’s creative precinct was the perfect setting, and owner Nicky Ginsberg,
the doyenne of the Chippendale art scene and director of the BEAMS Festival,
the perfect host.
Johnny Romeo is a man who’s received rave reviews in N.Y.
and L.A., has shown with Banksy and Shepard Fairey, collaborated with
Blink-182, and counts Leonardo Dicaprio amongst his many fans. What a privilege
it was, then, to have Johnny himself in attendance, explaining his artistic
vision and hanging out to shoot the breeze with Yelpers. Marky M put it best:
“What a beautiful, charismatic and compassionate man.”
And the work? Where to start. A collision of street art and
rock’n’roll swagger. An incendiary paean to Hollywood celebrity in all its
neon, trashy glory. James Dean, Elvis, Jim
Morrison, Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson and even
Galactus the World Devourer got the neo-expressionist pop art treatment.
Award-winning Mission Restaurant & Bar provided
aesthetically beautiful canapés nestled in a bower of tree branches, and the gents
from Green Fairy kept guests lubricated with Absinth, the once-outlawed spirit
popularised by avante-garde artistic luminaries in 19th century
What a way to cap off a memorable week that featured not
one, but two, smashing Elite Events.
As always, thanks to Sam
Macdonald Photography for the snaps. Want more?
