We popped by Amanda Deer Jewelry in East Austin to chat with small business owner, Amanda Eddy about how to shop local for the holidays. Yelp Shop’s Local 2017 is starting with a bang, read the full interview below..
What makes your business the best place to get gifts this holiday season?
Our dainty jewelry is designed right here in Austin and we offer a wide array of styles and pieces that are perfect for every day and all under $100. For a personalized touch, we also engrave necklaces and bracelets with initials, dates and even location coordinates. Perfect for celebrating an anniversary, birthdate or adding a special message to a piece.
What is your favorite local Austin business (that isn’t your own)?
The Bee Grocery. It’s a small artisanal grocery store/ coffee shop/ pho noodle stop on East 6th street around the corner from our studio. On most days, our team stops in 2-3 times for coffee refills or grabbing something we need for the store. The staff is so nice and their coffee, baked goods and pho are incredible.
Eggnog, best drink ever, or..?
If you add a little brandy and make it vegan…then yes, best drink ever.
What is your favorite part about the holidays?
Decorating! I love making our home beautiful for the holidays and having friends and family over to celebrate the season. I might also put my cats in Santa outfits, and that’s why they hate me. 🙂
What’s the perfect gift to bring to a holiday party?
A little succulent in a cute ceramic planter. Something that your host can put on a kitchen windowsill or on a desk. They don’t die quickly like flowers, and are just plain adorable! Our neighbors at Succulent Native have an incredible selection of tiny little pre-potted succulents and they even offer to-go containers if you’re swinging by to grab a quick gift.
What inspired you to start your small business?
In 2009 I was searching for a simple gold or silver necklace that I could wear every day and not take off, but everything I came across was so expensive. It was like the simplest pieces of jewelry were only being made in expensive materials like solid gold and platinum. So, I set out to create a jewelry line focusing on simple, everyday, quality pieces, under $100 and it struck a chord! We’ve had a successful e-commerce business for the past 7 years and are now so excited to have our first flagship store in downtown Austin.
When we stop by, what can we expect to find at your shop this holiday season?
We are showcasing some beautiful new colorful gemstone necklaces and bracelets that have gorgeous deep hues and are perfect for the holiday season. Also, tons of new stackable rings and new layered necklace sets that have been really popular with our customers.
