Before Thunder officially kicked off Derby Season Saturday, Yelp Louisville prepared for the weeks of partying with…a party! There was plenty of horsing around at this Pre-Derby throw down April 18th at the elegant Cafe Classico. From a spread of cheeses, fruit, and olives to an array of Cellar Door Chocolate's incredible bourbon balls, the snacks were plentiful. Alex K tried his best to sample "8 of 16 Bourbon Ball flavors" from Maple to Smokehouse to Brown Sugar – "wowza!"
And you can't have a Derby party without a "proper" Mint Julep. Maker's Mark provided the whole sha-bang, with shakers, simple syrup, mint, bourbon, and 2012 Derby glasses dipped in gold wax just for the Yelp Elite! Kathy V can't wait to impress visitors by touting her new skills in "how to make mint juleps so I don't have to buy it pre-mixed."
And it doesn't get any fancier than the elegant hats and fascinators from Dee's. Every size, shape and color you could imagine, perfectly created to accompany your Derby and/or Oaks dress. Even the guys had fun posing in the fantabulous headware.
Finally Elites entered the races with a match the Louisville horse statue to the location game and a team Julep off! They chose from mint, rosemary, basil, fresh fruits, and flavored syrups to concoct their very own cocktail in a timed competition. The roses went to Gregory G's team who modestly explained that "the best part of the evening was the irony that my wife and I succeeded in creating a modified mint julep that wasn't merely tolerable…but actually won something!" Not just their very own shakers and Derby Party gear, but their cocktail on Cafe Classico's menu for the next month! Cheers to that!
