We all know Leeds is packed with awesome independents, but it's what's going on behind the scenes that makes a place really stand out. So, where does one go to seek out serene sups, easy ales, and eclectic events? Read on, as this week we're getting up close and personal to proudly introduce Joe G of Outlaws Yacht Club, in our first 'Meet The Owner' blog post!
Rowena: So, what's OYC all about?
Joe: We just wanted a space to hang out, be creative, listen to music and meet like minded people: a social club for creatives and outlaws, serving good quality food, cake, coffee, and drink.
Rowena: Creatives and outlaws – sounds like yelpers! What is it that makes you guys stand out?
Joe: We've
a very relaxed environment for people to come and work on our free
wi-fi, join a social club, enjoy some great art… and listen to some of
the world's best DJs, playing on a vintage 70s soundsystem!
But what do the yelpers think of OYC? It's 'the perfect chill out venue for a lazy afternoon,' according to Graham J,
who can't get enough of the 'great coffee, cake, and games.' If you
need to escape the weather, 'the stew is homely and warming. Throw into
the mix some unusual beers' and you're set for the night. Want
entertainment? Joseph C recommends the 'poetry evenings, games nights, low key music events
and even Scalextric racing!' With something for everyone, from quizzes
to crafty clubs, just call them Jack and Master of happenings.
Rowena: And lastly, where do you guys go when you're not behind the bar?
Joe: Other places we like hanging out are Bird's Yard, The Reliance, Cosmic Slop, and Wharf Chambers.
And they're not the only fans of these places. Natalie O always finds it 'necessary to refuel with a cup of tea in quaint old cups,' at Bird's Yard, and Vicky R regularly sources 'unique veggie options' at The Reliance. If you're after a 'proper little find', Ben H recommends the Space Raiders at Wharf Chambers!
Rowena: Anything more to add about OYC?
Joe: Yes – we're family friendly!
Pop in and point the kids at their graffiti wall, or even the magic till, to see what they mean…
Need an excuse?
– Tuesday pub quiz, 8pm
– Yarnia, every other Tuesday knitting social
– Joe's Bakery, Belearic beats and cosmic curveballs
