Yelpers in Maine love giving back to their community! So once a month we volunteer with a local non-profit through a series we call #YelpHelps. The 2018 season kicked off with a return visit to our friends at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine in Portland. We support them annually in January by cleaning the house top to bottom. There’s nothing a little elbow grease and enthusiasm can’t do: from scrubbing the floors to dusting every photo, from cleaning the refrigerators to doing all the laundry – we.get.it.done. It’s always a rewarding experience, so check out the Photos and Reviews here.Marc B: “I love Yelp Helps. Prior to being involved with Yelp, I always wanted to actively volunteer, however, I never knew which organizations that I could be a part of. Luckily, Yelp Helps has shed light on many nonprofit organizations, and I always get to volunteer with fun people. The Ronald McDonald House was no different.”
In February we spent a Saturday afternoon at the Preble Street Resource Center assisting at their soup kitchen. PSRC serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to homeless and low-income adults (and youth) every single day totaling over 500,000 meals a year. Getting to be a small part of something so big was truly a wonderful experience; check out the love here.
Rodney M: “It is hard to talk about how wonderful an experience is, when you are doing community service for others. Though, Preble Street Resource Center has been a foundation of services for our community for as many years as I have lived in Maine and longer.”
Our winter session of #YelpHelps concluded with a Wednesday night at the Portland Gear Hub – a non-profit that recycles and repairs used outdoor equipment for resale at affordable prices to get more youth and adults active and outside. On our visit we assisted with some bicycle maintenance (and got really joyfully dirty doing it too)! Check it out!
Jocelyn A: “I was having a pretty crappy Wednesday and going into this event I was feeling a little crabby. Five minutes in, it was like a whole new day. It is impossible to feel unhappy when you enter the Portland Gear Hub and see all the bikes and outdoor equipment that generous Mainers have donated to this non-profit (it also helps to be surrounded by giggling Yelpers who are eager to help!).”
Volunteering has become a cornerstone of Yelp Maine; we know that it feels good to do good and are thrilled to be able to work with so many wonderful non-profits across the state again this year. We’d love to have you join us! Check our Calendar on Yelp for more information about where we’ll be in spring!
