One the most beloved series here in Maine is back for another year! #YelpHelps is a monthly outing where we connect users of the site with local non-profits to learn more about what they do before spending a few hours volunteering with them. We’ve been introduced to a whole host of wonderful charities and programs, and are delighted to repeat #YelpHelps again this year with even more organizations around the great state of Maine.
We know that it feels good to do good, and can’t wait to get our hands dirty!
We kicked off our 2016 #YelpHelps series with our friends, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine which, among other programs, provides affordable lodging to families of children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. This year, we did a deep clean of the facilities in Portland – including scrubbing the floors, cleaning out the refrigerators, wiping down the walls, and more. It was a great way to kick-off the new year, and we encourage you to check out the reviews and photos here.
In February we celebrated Valentine’s Day at Bayview Heights – an independent housing community for persons sixty-two years or older. We visited with the very fascinating residents; we cooked them breakfast which included eggs to order (who knew over-easy eggs were so hard to make under pressure?!), sausage, bacon, and home fries; and, we scrubbed the facilities until they were sparkling. Michelle E: “Yelp Helps is definitely something I look forward to each month. For this event, I was able to bring my son along and he had the time of his life. Who knew that a swiffer duster and a dust pan could provide hours of entertainment?”
Our season ended at the Portland Gear Hub – a shop that sells used and refurbished outdoor gear to support the community and youth development programs of Camp Ketcha – where we were challenged with big tasks like steadying and repairing ski racks, building work benches, and moving the winter gear out (goodbye ice skates!) and the spring gear (hello roller blades!) into their storefront. Reviews and photos can be found here!
Shane L: “Another #YelpHelps installment and it did not let me down when it came to doing good for others and feeling that sense of accomplishment. There is no way to put into words really the way it makes me feel that we can do this.”
Looking for an opportunity to volunteer and give back to your community? We’ve got you covered! #YelpHelps is available to ANYBODY with a Yelp account – all you have to do is RSVP!
