Tequila, it makes Yelpers very happy! Two days shy of Cinco de Mayo, The Voodoo Rooms hosted Yelp Edinburgh's May Elite Event for one mama Mexican party full of Casco Viejo tequila, Lupe Pintos chips and dip, exquisite Errington cheeses, sombreros, Mexican Wrestler masks, and plenty chilli. But this wasn't a lime, salt and shot tequila party – oh no. As 70 Yelpers made their way to Edinburgh's own tequila den, Ed from Casco Vijeo had 5 of of the finest tequilas ready.
The Voodoo Rooms was the perfect setting for a tequila tasting, with over 70 tequilas behind the bar they know how to mix up the perfect margarita. And that's exactly what they did for the Yelpers. With 70 fresh margaritas ready for the Yelpers arrival, along with some corn chips, and home-made salsa and guacamole from Lupe Pintos – Edinburgh's own pocket-sized Mexican deli – Ian D knew 'the warm welcome and chilled margaritas ensured a tequila happy start to another excellent, informative, Yelptastic event.'
But that margarita was just to start. Alex D admits 'I am a fan of mexican stuffs but tequila has always been the preserve of (well I guess the pickler of) my liver at 2am.' But Ed was happy to dispell the myth that tequila is to be shot with lime and salt at the end of a long night, and instead led the Yelpers through a tailored tasting of 5 different tequilas, likening it to finer spirits such as whiskies.
First up was the Casco Viejo Blanco, paired with Errington's Biggar Blue cheese – one of only two blue goat's cheeses produced in the UK (which is available to buy in Edinburgh's Earthy). 'The surprise for me' tells Claire L 'was the tequila and cheese paring. Ed from Casco Viejo was awesome and the tequila tasting was a revelation. No more shots for this girl, these tequilas were something else and the pairing with cheese was fab.'
Next up was Casco Viejo Resposado, alongside Errington's best-known cheese available in I.J.Mellis – Dunsyre Blue. As if two types of tequila and creamy cheeses weren't enough, Ed went on through some more more quality tequilas. The young Don Agustin with Reposado, having a great balance of flavours, the older Don Agustin Anejo, with much more of a rum-flavour, and then rounding things off with a very special nip of the Maracame Reposado which we'd wager converted every Yelper in the room to tequila. Olé indeed!
As if that weren't enough tequila, heading back to the Ballroom the Yelpers were treated to one of The Voodoo Rooms own speciality tequila cocktails: the El Diablo, with ginger beer, lime and grenadine. The pefect, cool accompaniment to The Voodoo Rooms' mexican feast of quesedillas and a hearty chilli. Needless to say, it was HOT.
Fuelled up on tequila and chilli beans, the Yelpers made the most of Trixta Photography's pop-up photo booth complete with sombreros, ponchos and, er, a Mexican wrestling mask.
After a massive thank you and mexican wave for Ed from Emporio and Iain at the Voodoo Rooms, the party continued well into the wee hours of the night with everyone enjoying many more El Diablo's at the main bar.
The biggest of thank you's to Ed and Casco Viejo for the almost endless tequila, Iain and the team at The Voodoo Rooms for hosting and for the delicious eats, Errington for the exquisite cheese, Lupe Pintos for the delicious hand-made chips and dip, Robin Mair for the candid photies and to Trixta Photography for the photo booth; a special thank you to Katie N for all her help on the night; and last but certainly not least, thank you to the Yelpers who came, imbibed and brought the banter. It wouldn't have been a party without you!
We can't say it better than a Yelper with a review:
'The Mexicans have a saying "To remedy all ills, Mezcal; to celebrate any good fortune, the same". Well, I think we were all celebrating our good fortune last night at being invited to another fabulous Elite Event!' Susan M
'Somebody mentioned Lupe Pintos, The Voodoo Rooms and Yelp Party all in one sentence and I was sold! Independent deli meets one of the most stylish bars in Edinburgh, hosted by the best social events team in the city.' Susan D
'Not "just another tequila sunrise". Oh no, dear Eagles. Not this time. I always enjoy a tutored tasting done well, and I'm just a simple guy who knew nothing about tequila other than it comes from Mexico. I know a little about cheese. But put the two together, and – bang! Total explosion of flavours. Loved it. LOVED IT. Did I tell you I loved it? Two thumbs up to the guys from Casco Viejo for a fantastic learning experience, and for adding something different to my shopping list.' Baxter T
'Most awesome event to attend? Uh huh! That Jenny L fromYelp knows how to party but more importantly how to bring a quality night to quality folk. Learnt loads about the tequila and it was divine (after initial sniggers and memory associations of mad crazy nights). Super fresh experience.' Erin M
Until next time!
