Yelp Cleveland’s Axe Throwing 101

This October, Yelp Cleveland celebrated Halloween at Class Axe Throwing in Valley View. Yelpers sported their best costumes to learn about the newest craze of axe throwing. Founded in November 2016, Class Axe focuses on overcoming physical challenges through a high-intensity, adrenaline-pumping battle of axe throwing.

Matt, general manager, started off our evening with a safety overview. Class Axe also hosts parties and corporate team building events, so they were more than ready to show our Elites the ropes. Before starting, everyone developed their axe throwing alias or lumberjack nickname, like Her Axellence, Axe Attack, and Paul Bunyan. From there, we learned some rules and headed into the controlled range.The group split into teams and went to work with the axeperts, Your Axellency and T-Raxe. They taught Yelpers the proper technique for both one-handed and two-handed throwing. With patience and passion, the axeperts helped Yelpers become the best throwers possible. As Yelp Elite Marisa D. said, “The staff made it so fun! They were all very welcoming and excited about axe throwing. It showed through their teaching. They were also very good about the safety aspect of axe throwing.”

With our feet planted and hands in place, we took on the challenge to hit the bullseye. We learned that throwing is a lot gentler than you’d expect. Hitting the bullseye is all about following through and letting go at the right moment. The most important pro-tip? Throw from the hips, not the arms. With great instruction and practice, Yelpers hit bullseyes left and right.Yelp Elite Evan F. said it best, “A few rounds of practice followed by a series of three different games made for an engaging experience and plenty of time to try and figure out the best/favorite techniques for getting that axe to stick into the wooden targets. Not an easy task, let me tell you.” The room was full with the spirit of competition. As axes went flying, Elites rallied around their teammates and fought to win the title of Lumber Lord. As Yelp Elite HerBrina S. wrote, “My team kicked some axes during the game rounds. I mean, we won every single game!”
