Torn as to what to do this weekend? Yelp NYC teams up with The New Stand for a few handpicked food and drink destinations, as well as some fun events to add to your calendar.
EAT
[Massoni – 11 E. 31st Street in Midtown]
Chef Dale Talde of the eponymous Talde with locations in New York, Miami, and Jersey City, unveils a fresh Italian concept in the new Arlo Nomad Hotel. They call what they’re doing “Inauthentic Italian” fare (think Arancini Balls but with biyrani-style rice served with cool ranch raita and spicy tomato; and Mafalde with uni, serrano and smoked onion dashi), so you can bet your grandmother won’t have any idea what she’s looking at if she comes across your social media #foodporn.
[SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa – 33 E. 20th Street]
The only LA transplant that could be more exciting than SUGARFISH would be In-N-Out, but some dreams will never be realized. Landing in the heart of Flatiron, the So Cal institution fills a sushi void in New York, where oftentimes your only raw fish options are $400 omakase dinners or NYU sushi joints that smell like vomit and sake bombs. They currently don’t take reservations, so dip in during off times to avoid lengthy waits.
DRINK
[Rolf’s – 281 3rd Avenue]
11 months out of the year, Rolf’s is the kind of dive bar you head into if you’re really looking to tie one on. That’s not to say you won’t have the same goal in December, it’s just that during this 30 day stretch, Rolf’s becomes an absolute winter wonderland. We’re not sure if Guinness has a world record for the most decorated German watering hole, but chances are Rolf’s is a contender. It’s the Clark Griswald of Christmas bars.
DO
[The Great Northern Cheese Fest – Flushing Town Hall]
Artisanal creameries showcase a diverse array of exquisite artisanal cheeses from nutty sheep’s milk, tommes, and sharp Cheddars to luscious triple cremes and tangy goat cheeses along with the finest wines and spirits. Tickets start at $40.
[Unveiling of the Croyaki – Taiyaki NYC at 119 Baxter Street]
Meet the latest food trend to sweep the city, the Croyaki. This dessert hybrid combines a croissant with their famous fish cone taiyaki (you’ve seen it all over the ‘gram), and it’s served warm with your choice of filling. Snap a pic or it didn’t happen.
[f.a.d. Winter Holiday Pop Up – 190 Court Street in Brooklyn]
This chic, curated indie market showcases over 45 independent artists, designers and makers. Swoop jewelry, accessories, vintage finds, fashion, art and photography, home and kitchen items, bath and body essentials, and much more. Entry is free.
