There’s a cocktail revival sweeping the continent and we’re here to cover it. Welcome to Yelp’s Tales & Cocktails, where we spotlight 5-star bartenders and the establishments they work at.
Osteria Segreto is not the easiest spot to find in Omaha’s Blackstone District. It makes sense as its name translates to “secret place.” To find it, head to the back of the many bustling businesses along the north side of Farnam Street and look for the door with a small window and candle. If the candle is lit, Osteria Segreto is open. Just be sure to knock first before entering. Inside, it’s dark and intimate. The decor is classy with a heavy nod towards the prohibition era. It’s a modern speakeasy. Most nights, you’ll find lead bartender Tony Horner creating some of the most interesting drinks in town. Tony has been bartending for eight years, honing his craft in Las Vegas, Southern California and currently in Omaha, his hometown.
We talked to Tony about his passion for pouring the perfect drink, the story behind Osteria Segreto, as well as his favorite spot to enjoy a drink.
Who or what inspired you to go into bartending?
I have always loved to work with food and I wanted a job that is fun, exciting, and different every day. My pursuit into craft cocktailing was inspired by my mentors, Chef Angelo Sosa, and Lead Bartender at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas Julian Luna.
What’s the history behind Osteria Segreto?
Osteria Segreto was something that the owners, the DiGiacomo family, always had in mind. Their grandfather owned a prominent bar in [Omaha’s] Little Italy for close to 40 years, and they wanted to do a tribute to him and their heritage. The result was a classy Italian speakeasy.
What makes Osteria Segreto unique?
There’s so much that makes us unique, but some of the highlights include, table side bar service, our well thought out vestibule, and my signature liqueurs.
What’s your favorite cocktail to make?
Lady Lindy is by far my favorite cocktail to make, it features two of my homemade liqueurs, gin and lemon juice
What do you enjoy the most about serving cocktails?
I love helping people broaden their horizons on what they like. I enjoy making custom cocktails for people and helping choose menu items that they normally would over look.
What’s your favorite spot to grab a cocktail?
My favorite spot to get a cocktail is Abigaile Restaurant in Hermosa Beach, CA. The bartenders there get creative with all sorts of fresh ingredients and specialize in creating unique drinks.
