With over 19 years of professional salon experience and a lifelong passion for hair, it’s no surprise Niki Moon’s business is booming in the Chicago Burbs. Niki Moon Salon has been voted the #1 salon in Naperville and one of the top 20 salons in the Salon of the Year contest for Salon Today magazine. We asked Niki to share her story and some of the insights she’s gained in the last five years since opening her fabulous salon and spa.

Why did you decide to start your business? Tell us your backstory!
I have been in the beauty industry for more than half of my life. I love every aspect of it. My favorite thing about being in this industry is how I get the opportunity to completely transform someone. Not only do I transform the way they look, I transform the way they feel. I get to elevate their mood and can make a bad day great. This career is so much more than a haircut, it’s about the experience I am able to provide to my clients.
Why do you love doing business here in the Chicago Burbs?
I grew up in the Chicago Burbs! I definitely have an attachment to the area. I love the people here — they are warm, friendly, loyal, and very supportive of local businesses. Clients genuinely love to celebrate the success of their area businesses and with their support we have been able to flourish.
What’s the most helpful piece of customer feedback you’ve received?
A while back we had several clients comment that it was difficult to book an appointment due to lack of availability. The salon was growing (and continues to grow) very quickly. We adjusted our hours, extending some evening and weekend hours, to better accommodate more clients. I also have a training program for the salon in which I personally train all the new stylists so they meet the Niki Moon Salon standards.
What’s your advice for other business owners or someone who wants to start a small business?
Being a business owner is not easy. There is a lot of time, money, risk, and personal sacrifice that goes into owning a business. When you put your all into your business it is extremely difficult not to take it personal when someone says something negative about your business. It is important to separate your personal feelings from the situation and take a professional approach. Take the negativity and turn it into a positive. Learn how to grow and improve from the situation. I also strongly believe in being honest and doing what is right. If you run your business with your customers’ best interest at heart, they will reward you.
