During a busy festival season in Montreal we caught up with local small biz owners Sherwin and Teresa of Evaton Bunup. They are a new catering service specializing in Jamaican cuisine. Known to some Montrealers for their elusive jerk chicken pop-up, you can now find them serving up the goods at private events and glorious outdoor festivals like Taste of the Caribbean.

Why did you start your businesses? Tell us your backstory!
My husband and I were born and raised in a small Jamaican town in central Jamaica called Mandeville. Eating street food in Jamaica is something we do almost everyday, and jerk is one of the most popular things to eat when in JA.
My husband has always had a passion for cooking. He went to school for cooking, but he learnt more French cuisine at school. He learnt how to cook authentic Jamaican food from watching and helping his mother.
When we started our first Montreal business it was a café, run by all Jamaican partners, and so we wanted to bring a Jamaican flair to the café. When the original café and some partners moved to the US, people seemed pretty hungry for more jerk chicken in Montreal. We decided we didn’t need the coffee shop to serve this food, it has a following all its own and people connect with it, so we decided to start the catering gig. We particularly love catering private events and festivals because of the great energy.
We move around doing festivals and more, so the best way to find us is to follow us on Instagram @evaton_bunup.
