Slow down for self care – that’s the mantra at Alchemy Slow Living Studio. Located in downtown Ferndale, Alchemy is a beautiful, welcoming place to host a henna party, experience a customized facial, and shop a boutique of niche, natural products. We sat down with Alchemy founder and owner, Monique Herzig to learn more about Alchemy and her love of the Detroit area business community.

Why did you decide to start your business? Tell us your backstory!
I have a degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies which informs my views on wellness and contentment. My coursework inspired an interest in the modern paradox that even though we have all these time-saving devices, we continue to work more and leisure less. As a society, we tend to glorify busy even though we know it makes us unwell.
So I created Alchemy to encourage us all to embrace elements of a Slow Living lifestyle: create real, robust connections with each other, our community and our own narrative. Our message is that self-care isn’t selfish.
It’s a point of pride that Alchemy is the only studio in Michigan dedicated offering henna body art. We are synthetic-free and plant based. Our boutique offers niche natural fragrances and heritage inspired skin care.
Why do you love doing business here in Metro-Detroit?
Actually, I can’t imagine doing business anywhere else. Detroit is a creative incubator for small business with consumers that expect authentic, well-made, hand-crafted products and unique experiences. And my city of Ferndale is especially supportive of small women-owned businesses.
What’s the most helpful piece of customer feedback you’ve received?
It’s what my customers show me they want that has guided the direction of Alchemy.
Also, it’s little challenges, like way-finding, parking meters, and miscommunication that are most instructive – because it helps me improve customer service.
What’s your advice for other business owners or someone who wants to start a small business?
When it comes to success, sustainability is more important than splash: my advice is to reach out to your small business community partners for resources. Metro Detroit has a lot to offer in support, strategy, and networking.
