February is Black History Month, a time where we celebrate all of the accomplishments that African Americans have achieved in our city. To highlight this; we have put together a small, but tasty list of passionate black-owned eateries that contribute to the heart, and possibly the waistline, of Middle Tennessee. Enjoy!
Emanuel, Derrick & Clinton, Founders of Slim & Husky’s

From the Founders: Slim & Husky’s is a fast casual neighborhood Pizza Beeria providing a gourmet build your own pizza experience made with locally sourced cheeses, meats and vegetables to create a taste of freshness within each bite.
But what do Yelpers think? – “OMG! I’ve heard about this amazing restaurant forever and finally stopped in… I tried the PREAM and Smoked Chicken Herb and I must say these were the BEST pizzas I have ever tasted. From the customer service to the music and ambiance of the restaurant, everything was amazing!”

From the Founder: For almost 10 years, I have enjoyed creating cupcakes together with my family locally and nationally. Featured daily from my kitchen are the sweet treats we rise early to prepare. At The Cupcake Collection, we are not trying to reinvent the wheel. We are just trying to do classic things well. Our cupcakes taste homemade because they are homemade.
But what do Yelpers think? – “Seriously the best dessert on the run you can find in Nashville, if not the whole Southeastern United States. I have been a fan of this place since they first opened their doors, and have tried to push them into the mouths and hearts of everyone who would listen… These are not day old dried or frozen cupcakes. These are fresh, tasteful, and full of wonderful flavors!”

Ouida & James, Founders of Jamaicaway Restaurant & Catering
From the Founders: Once upon a time, an elementary school teacher and a software developer took a chance… The founders relocated from Boston, MA to Nashville, TN in 1999. Fast forward four years later Jamaicaway Restaurant & Catering was born. On December 15, 2003, we sold our first meal of Spicy Jerk Chicken with Rice-N-Peas and Fried Plantains. Fifteen years later, we’re still serving up the good eats that everyone can enjoy!
But what do Yelpers think? – “Love coming here to grab some great Jerk food. They are located inside of the Nashville Farmers Market. My favorite here is the spicy Jerk Chicken. I usually add in a side of Green and rice and peas… If you want some Good Jamaican soul food, you won’t be disappointed!”

From the Founders: Opening their doors in the summer of 2017, Shugga Hi Bakery and Café brings everything from Mama’s delicious homestyle recipes to Sandra and Kathy’s custom creations. Keeping Mama’s tradition, it’s always recommended that you have taste of dessert first before your meal. This one is promised not to spoil your appetite.
But what do Yelpers think? – “Wow! They have so many choices from breakfast items to lunch items and desserts. Service was super attentive and nice. The food was delicious and fresh… eggs, bacon, potatoes, and the French toast was so yummy! The live music just puts the cherry on top!”
– Veronica C.
Tiffany & Clifton, Founders of The Southern V
From the Founders: As a husband and wife team, we strive to provide hours that still allows us to keep our family balanced and the customer satisfied. Our intent is to remain intentional in our actions and words. We hope that you feel the love as soon as you enter this environment we worked tirelessly to bring to Nashville and its visitors. Our goal is to be a Nashville staple that provides exceptional food that just happens to be vegan!
But what do Yelpers think? – “Sweet Vegan Jesus, The Southern V is a game changer! I stopped by today and ordered the hot chik’n with double Mac N Cheeze. The seitan based version of this Nashville staple was simply delicious. It literally tastes like spicy fried chicken. Very Impressive flavor. Also, the Mac N Cheeze is creamy and tastes like the traditional dairy version!”

Marcus Buggs (center), Founder of Coneheads.
From the Founder: Putting a twist of soul to your classic chicken & waffles, we combine innovation and flavor that will leave you filled and satisfied. Enjoy chicken in a waffle cone with savory homemade sauces and comfort food sides. Located in the heart of East Nashville, the eclectic styled space will make you feel like a kid again!
But what do Yelpers think? – “All the praises for Coneheads! A well deserved 5-stars!… I enjoyed the waffle cone drizzled with 24k and white BBQ on the side, what a combination! The waffle cone was the right compliment to the savory chicken. Not too sweet and the perfect consistency. I’m super excited to come visit again and to enjoy the beautiful outdoor patio when weather gets nicer!”
