The Sacramento Yelp Community came with faux six guns a-blazin' to Yelp's Wild West Showdown on Saturday! Cowpokes from far and wide literally took over the Cordova Restaurant Casino, the "classiest card room and gourmet restaurant in Northern California!"
Guests were greeted by a real live horse and carriage buggie from Top Hand Ranch and hay stacks from Bradhsaw Feed & Supply while waiting to get checked-in, making the inevitable line we've all come to expect at open parties less of an issue and more of the perfect photo opp! A $5 suggested donation went to Horses, Hope, and Healing, a 100% volunteer program that provides a positive environment for young people by connecting them with horses that were often formerly abused or neglected. They facilitated the wrist band process, allowing for a faster check-in and giving them the opportunity to directly interact with everyone, resulting in over $800 raised (see, horses really were saved)!
Once inside, the showdown became a hoedown, as our hosts generously wrangled up quite the evening of booze, food, gaming, and o.k. corraling! The boot stompin' tunes were provided by Sacramento Banjo Band. These fellas really know how to get busy on the banjo! There was also a nifty country soundtrack and a projection of classic western flicks assembled by videographer Jason Vetterli for additional flare.
And what would a western event be without a good old gun draw? Modernized, of course, in the form of beer pong on the patio! It was a bit of a stretch, but far better than broken beer bottles and ruffians swinging from the chandeliers.
Cordova went all out with a decked-out staff and $5 gambling vouchers for all attendees to try their luck at games like Blackjack, Texas Hold 'Em, Pai Gow and Baccarat… one of the non-profit volunteers even won $1,000! Cowboys and girls were busting at the Wrangler jean seams with complimentary nibbles like chicken fingers, fries, potato skins, potstickers and pork sliders, and a seemingly endless supply of suds from Olympia. As to not overwhelm the bar, an entire room was transformed into a Bacardi lover's dream, where the Bacardi gals showed off their newest grape flavor and mixed up a lovely coconut/pineapple concoction to boot!
You can't have a showdown without a way to capture the memories. That job was accomplished by the lovable Photostudio29 and Encore Photobooths, the latter of which provided an incredibly popular corral for folks to wrangle up sepia-colored nostalgic prints of themselves!
Yvonne N sums it all up: "This event put Sacramento on the Yelp map!! It's safe to say that out of towners will probably be making their way to Sac for our events soon! I would like to commend Sacramento YELPERS because we have definitely recruited a strong, intimate community!"
Until next time…happy trails!
