Black Button Distilling is Rochester’s first grain-to-glass distillery since prohibition. As part of our ROCMade series, we dove into the history of Black Button and what inspired owner and head distiller, Jason Barrett, to diverge from the family button business to distilling whiskey in downtown Rochester. First off, his color blindness made his button sorting attempts futile so his interests and career path veered toward home brewing, originally testing out varieties of recipes, then diverging to his plan to open a distillery to bring his love of bourbon to Rochester. They now offer several spirits including citrus forward gin, bourbon and whiskey, vodka, apple pie moonshine, and more varieties.
