They say Yelpers can eat, and there's no question I can back that assertion up. But not even the most experienced PDXYelpers were not ready for what Master of Meat BJ Smith had ready for December 11th's Yelp Secret Supper Club at Smokehouse 21! Hint – it was lots of meat.
Yeah. If that picture's not worth 1,000 words, here's a few more. "Still in a food coma," raves Melvin T. "Forgive me Father for I have sinned," confesses Tamara C. "Seve meat dishes were offered to us! Not one, not two, but seven total!" exclaims Joe M. And while we ommitted the six extra exclamatin points Joe used on that quote for form's sake, they would actually apply here. Dinner started off with a plate including cornbread with a honey center, a smoked oyster cocktail and the signature deviled egg with hot link sausage on top. Next came a barrage of family-style plates which were so numerous we'll have to enter list form here: brussels sprouts with roasted garlic; three-cheese macaroni and cheese with bacon and bread crumbs; coleslaw; fingerling potato salad; BBQ beans; braised greens with bacon; pickled veggies; beef brisket; pulled pork; smoked chicken; hot link sausage; baby back lamb ribs; spare ribs; and smoked steelhead. It sounds like a lot because it was. As Sarah C confirms, "It was an evening of gluttony." And what better to wash down a bout of gluttony than frosty brews from our partner Ninkasi, which brought along some Sleigh'r, Tricerahops Imperial IPA and Believer Double-Red Ale to pair with this meat overload. Alison Wood from Ninkasi was on hand to talk about pairings and introduce the ales. Added bonus!
Feel full just reading about it? We hope you saved room for a scoop of ice cream. Yelpers did, as once we had feasted on as much meat as possible, we took a four-block walk over to Salt & Straw's NW 23rd location for a little nightcap – a scoop of heavenly local ice cream! The fabulous Kim Malek treated us all to something so unnecessary but oh so necessary… if you get what I mean. Either way, it was a super delicious way to end out the night and check out the second location of this Portland favorite!
All in all, Smokehouse 21 and Ninkasi reset the Portland Yelp Secret Supper Club Bar to all new heights. Huge thanks to BJ and the Smokehouse 21 crew, Alison and Nicole from Ninkasi, Kim and the crew at Salt & Straw, and of course all of the Yelpers that trusted me enough to shell out $30 for a secret dinner.
Until next time, keep digesting.
