Why just drop by Overture Center for the Arts for a show when you can make a night of it? Yelp Madison Elites and their guests did just that on February 8, 2018. Kicking the night off was the Overture’s Get Social program, followed by a concert in Overture Hall by the UK a capella smash, Gobsmacked!.
The evening kicked off in the Wisconsin Studio on the third floor of the Overture Center. Cozy lighting helped attendees forget about the impending snow and get settled in for a night of a cappella fun. As part of the pre-show happy hour, guests received their choice of complimentary beverages, including a themed cranberry cocktail. There was also a table of winter-ready light bites for the taking: warm pretzels with a trio of mustards and creamy artichoke dip.
The buffet didn’t stop there. Guests were also treated to build-your-own goodie bag table with tons of swag and a chance to win a prize pack filled with tickets and theater goodies from the Overture Center. Local a cappella group The Ambulatones serenaded the group while they mixed and mingled, and the headliners of the night popped in for a Q&A session.
At 7:30 PM it was time to head into the Circle level of Overture Hall, the 2,255-seat main theater. A wall of speakers dominated the stage, and as the lights went down we were reminded that the entire show would be performed live and by the cast’s voices only. This was easy to forget with the range of sound throughout the show, anchored by world champion beatboxer Ball-Zee. Gobsmacked! went on a journey from contemporary hits to pop classics with a few original pieces thrown in to tie the acts together. Highlights included “Life on Mars” and a mash-up of Adele and Gnarls Barkley. The audience capped off the night with a “Hey Jude” sing-along and a standing ovation for the UK singers.
