A Night Out At Seattle’s Oldest Mexican Restaurant

Priding itself as an old school Mexican dive and bar and Seattle original since 1974, Mama’s Cantina opened up its back party room space to 60 Yelp Elites and their guests for a night of Mexican food, margarita, and tequila tasting.

The menu included ensalada de nopales (cactus paddle salad), tostada de tinga (shredded meat tostadas), tacos de papa (potato tacos), taquitos de papa con chorizo (potato and chorizo taquitos), torta ahogada (drowned sandwich), and tacos de barbacoa (barbacoa tacos).

Upon arrival, guests were directed to fix their own plates, buffet style. There was plenty food to go around with the staff refilling the food stations and keeping everyone’s bellies happy. Adjacent to the food station was the private bar where 60 margaritas were prepared for the Yelpers to taste the featured Maestro Dobel tequila.

After the attendees were done eating, a rep from Maestro Dobel educated them about the tequila they were enjoying, as small tastings were poured into their Yelp shot glasses on the table. Yelpers learned that Maestro Dobel has eleven generations of tequila mastery, it is single-estate sourced, double distilled, and produced in small batches with every process done by hand.

The specific type of Maestro Dobel tequila sampled was the Diamante, the world’s first clear multi-aged tequila, which the rep described as “the rulebreaker.” This is because this tequila blended extra-añejo, añejo, and reposado tequila and then aged it in European oak barrels and double filtered it.

During the event, Yelpers had the opportunity to capture their experience and share it on social media. The winner took home a $50 Mama’s Cantina gift card. Those that stuck around to the end were treated with frozen margaritas to keep the party going.
