Sometimes it’s nice to get out of the city and onto the farm. The Madison Yelp Elite Squad and their guests did just that on September 20, 2018 when they ventured northeast of Madison to Sassy Cow Creamery. Located in the town of Columbus, Sassy Cow is a working dairy that is unique for producing both organic and traditional milk in addition to their rich and delicious ice cream.
To kick off the night, guests met at the Creamery Store. They were treated to samples of Sassy Cow’s chocolate milk and new Cold Brew Moocha Milk, plus a complimentary dish of ice cream. With flavors like Triple Chocolate, Mint Brownie Blast, Apple Pie, and Birthday Cake it was hard to choose. Luckily the shop stayed open late so folks could take home additional flavors to enjoy. While exploring all the dairy delights that the shop had to offer, attendees shared their dream ice cream flavor for a chance to go home with a sundae kit stocked with stoneware bowls, rose gold spoons, hot fudge, cherries, and fancy sprinkles. Congrats to Michelle O for her winning combination of chocolate and coffee liqueur.
Once everyone had their fill of ice cream, they headed up the road a couple of miles to the farm proper. A beautiful modern barn facade stood out in the dusk, and the group settled upstairs to learn a little bit more about the Sassy Cow operation. A cute short film provided some background, and co-owner James Baerwolf talked more about the farm and took questions from the Squad. Armed with some new knowledge, the tour moved down to the milking parlor where James talked developments in technology and walked everyone through the process of collecting milk from the cows.
Speaking of cows, the tour ended with a visit to the giant barn where they spend their evenings and hide out from inclement weather. The group got some final takeaways about a day in the life of a dairy cow, and then was set loose for some up close and personal time with the cows. There were a few social butterflies in the bunch that loved being pet, having their ears scratched, and posing for pictures.
