It might be cold and dark outside, but Madison Chocolate Company was overflowing with warmth, chocolate, and Kin Kin Coffee at Yelp’s Dark Night on January 24, 2018. Situated on the west end of Monroe Street, Madison Chocolate Company is a gluten-free shop that uses all-natural ingredients and local, organic dairy. Madison Chocolate Company was originally conceived as a subscription-based service, but it quickly grew into a retail location that opened in 2017. Owner Megan Hile serves Kin Kin Coffee at her store and shares their approach of serving a high-quality product with passion. Bringing in one of Kin Kin’s owners for the night made the perfect pairing.
Thirty Yelp Elites gathered at owner Megan’s shop to sample over a dozen chocolates and learn the art of cupping from Kin Kin owner Kyle Johnson. The chocolates ranged from 100% dark down through a white chocolate bar infused with lemon. Some of Megan’s favorites to share were a bourbon vanilla bar and a red coconut curry chocolate. In addition to the various bars that were up for sampling, Madison Chocolate Company had several housemade chocolate treats for the taking including a gluten-free brownie, sea salt caramels, star anise truffles, and creamy hot chocolate.
Coffee connoisseurs were made with Kyle’s cupping session. Guests had the opportunity to smell, taste, and explore the mouth feel of coffees from Columbia, El Salvador, and Ethiopia while learning more about the journey from bean to brew. Armed with their new knowledge of coffee and chocolate, attendees mixed and mingled between the two tables to create their own pairings.
The Madison Elite Squad also shared their charitable side by donating over 200 personal care and clothing items to DAIS – Domestic Abuse Intervention Services. DAIS works to make Dane County a safer, more just, more equitable place for people who have experienced domestic violence, their children, and the people who love them.
Elites left the party with coffee mugs, hand-carved rosewood spoons, and a smattering of Yelp goodies. Head on over to the event page to read the five-star reviews and check out photos from Elites and our event photographer, Nora Feldman.
