Why “Taco Tuesdays”? Sure, everybody loves alliteration, but shouldn’t everybody’s favorite Mexican dish deserve to be served seven nights a week? That’s what Yelp thinks, which is why earlier this month we teamed up with Portland’s own Feed the Mass. Together, our two organizations offered three consecutive nights of cooking classes that taught members of the Yelp Elite Squad how to make easy, delicious, and authentic tacos from scratch! And what’s more, guests also learned about Feed the Mass’s commitment to providing affordable cooking and nutrition education to people across all of Portland’s communities.
Each night, class began with Feed the Mass founder, chef Jacobsen Valentine, sharing his story and offering a brief run-through of what participants could expect. Soon enough, each guest took to their station, cracked open a beer, and followed along as their group worked together to make an unforgettable Mexican meal. At Feed the Mass, everybody has a job. Some were in charge of roasting, chopping, and mixing fresh vegetables and herbs to create a perfectly-spiced corn salsa. Some roasted and pulled flavorful chicken thighs. Others pressed fresh tortillas! Working together, each team of Yelp Elites had delicious, completely made-from-scratch pollo tacos in just about an hour!
Of course, then it was time to eat! As the Yelpers chowed down on their tacos, they couldn’t help but go back for seconds or even thirds! Meanwhile, chef Jacobsen shared with the group the wide breadth of classes offered by Feed the Mass. Everybody was impressed that for the affordable price of $25 per person, attendees could learn to make everything from bao buns to paella to home-cooked ribs. And knowing that their registration fee helped to educate others in the community was just icing on the cake – which you can also learn to make at Feed the Mass!

About our Host:
Feed the Mass began with a dream, a dream to improve health by holistic and practical means. What do we mean by that? Not everyone has access to the best medical care or dieticians for preventative care. Heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, obesity, and hypertension are all prominent health challenges in Western civilization today. Most of these conditions and illnesses can either be prevented or have their symptoms significantly reduced through proper dieting. Feed the Mass, as a not-for-profit business, desires to build the Oregon community around food empowerment for every individual.
Our aspiration is to empower every individual with the expertise in finding affordable produce, maximizing yield with healthy food products, and skillful application in the kitchen. It is essential for us to move away from processed foods and to reintroduce fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins; we implement the techniques to do so through our cooking courses.
