On Saturday, October 8, 2011, 70 of Portland's Yelp Elite were treated to an evening of late fall sun and fun at Division's neighborhood favorite, Sunshine Tavern for Yelp's Mellow Yellow Elite Event. A rare appearance of that elusive yellow orb in the sky only brightened the already exciting mood in Jenn Louis and David Welch's shining SE spot.
With a Mellow Yellow theme for the event and excitement over an unexpectedly sunny day, Portland Elites made the trip to SE Division with smiles on their faces and an exuberant vibe. "The whole crew at Sunshine really busted their butts making fabulous drinks and food." Jeannie J "could eat mounds of those fries and hazelnuts… and definitely a whole fried chicken sandwich next time." Jeannie couldn't be more right. The Sunshine kitchen pumped out a dizzying flow of NY White and Pepperoni thin crust pizzas; pork, cow, and fried chicken burgers; fries both with and without gravy and cheese; and seasoned hazelnut pinchos. As Andrew P notes, "it is so nice to find a new place that is not just putting out the same old pub grub, some new exciting great atmosphere and flavor!" We agree 100%!
But it wasn't just all about the food. A rare sunny October afternoon calls for a nice bout of day drinking, and Mellow Yellow was no exception. Joe M proudly proclaims that "locally-made vodka with ginger beer = happy patron!" Happy indeed. The bright yellow theme attire paired quite well with rosy cheeks of Yelpers imbibing Moscow Mules made with New Deal Distillery's Portland 88 Vodka as well as all-natural margarita slushies chock full of Sauza Blanco! Claudia G and like-minded hop-heads dug on frosty pints of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale fresh on tap. There was nary a thirsty palate in the place. And what's drinking without games? Tiffany B found "the old Pac Man and Donkey Kong games are cool, and the shuffle board was one of the main attractions" at the event. Free every day of the week? We'll be heading back for some Kong soon!
Andrew G has nothing but props: "This was my favorite Elite Event yet. Everything was just marvelous. The location, the weather, the company, the atmosphere and the sea of yellow all made it an amazing time." None of it would be have been possible without the generous support of David and Jenn from Sunshine Tavern; Tom and Sarah from New Deal Distillery; The fine brewers and friends at Sierra Nevada; Tom M and his trusty camera; The indominable Matt D; and of course the Portland Yelp Elite – the sunniest bunch of folks on earth.
Until next time, SYOY!
