In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the many incredible women-owned businesses found on Yelp. In this piece, we’re excited to highlight women business owners in industries that historically have been owned and operated by men. From locksmiths and carpenters to mechanics and distillers, read about some of the remarkable women across the United States breaking barriers. 

Businesses listed below are organized alphabetically by city and state.

    Sally McKnight, the owner of The Irish Sweep, Inc. has been a dedicated chimney professional since 1982. She is known for her expertise in and passionate enthusiasm for the fireplace and chimney industry.

    Owners Vanessa and  Annie got to know each other through bike racing. The two spent a lot of time over long car trips to bike races and on training rides planning BFF Bikes and are thrilled it is now a reality.
  9. Sailing Islander (Boat Tours, Boat Charters) – Jersey City, NJ
    Established in 2020. Sailing Islander is proud to be the only woman-owned private charter in NY Harbor! Experience the difference with Sailing Islander!
  10. Handy Ma’am – Brooklyn, NY
    Handyma’am is a one woman (Katie) with several tool bags who can fix, build, install and create just about anything. Handyma’am specializes in providing excellent service, quality craftsmanship and a personalized approach to home repairs.
  11. Alternative Auto Care – Columbus, OH
    Established in 1983. Alternative Auto Care is your neighborhood, women-owned and operated eco- and LGBT-friendly garage.
  12. Bearded Lady Painting – Philadelphia, PA
  13. Northrop’s Furniture Shop – Austin, TX
    A local business run by three skilled women craftspeople who happen to be a crew of single moms. They provide exceptional services such as furniture painting and refinishing, and furniture caning, weaving and wicker repair. 
  14. Veritas Electric – Seattle, WA
  15. Republic Restoratives Distillery – Washington DC
