Zondag, zondag, zondag 3 februari…. Wat doe je nou zoal op een zondagochtend?! Koffie drinken! En wel een heuse koffie-tasting bij Starbucks The Bank! Wat voor soorten / smaken / rassen koffie zijn er en hebben zij? Wat gebeurt er als je koffie & brie samen laat gaan? Klinkt raar? Blegh? Wij weten inmiddels… dat is helemaal niet raar!
Allereerst: je moet wel met een beetje stijl & klasse aankomen op de 'vroege' (11.00 uur) zondagochtend. Gelukkig is daar Uber, nu ook in Nederland! Zij waren zo leuk om met ons samen te werken aan het volgende: we vertelden de Elites niet waar ze naar toe moesten deze ochtend, we vertelden alleen dát er een Event was en dat ze een Uber konden bestellen… Alle chauffeurs wisten met het codewoord "Yelp" (en wanneer is dat nou niet een codewoord) waar ze naar toe moesten… Zit je dan: in een über-slee van Uber: WiFi, water, tijdschriften achterin en in stijl wordt je door de hele stad vervoerd! En zo stond je daar als Elite ineens voor Starbucks The Bank!
We begonnen met een rondleiding door het pand. Hoel leuk om te leren over de historie van koffie, hoe de Hollanders koffieplanten hebben gestolen in de 17e Eeuw om hier te gaan verbouwen, het verschil van verschillende 'rassen' bonen en het effect van de locatie op de smaak. En wist je dat: het Starbucks 'The Bank' heet omdat het in het oude gebouw van de ABN Amro zit? En dat op deze plek eerst de kluis zat? Ze hebben het speciaal op zo'n manier ingericht dat er veel licht binnenkomt, je meteen de counter ziet als je binnenkomt en ze hebben expres natuurlijke producten gebruikt in de inrichting (hout, juten, etc.) zodat het er warm en gezellig is. Prrrrima om met je laptopje te werken, met vriendjes & vriendinnetjes koffie te drinken, spelletjes te spelen (heuse spelletjeshoek) en je kinderen kun je er eventueel ook kwijt -in de spelletjeshoek dus. Of om een Coffee Tasting te doen!
Laurie schonk steeds verschillende soorten koffie; de bonen waren allemaal van hetzelfde ras, maar alleen gegroeid op andere locaties in de wereld en wat doet dat nou met de smaak? Kenia vs. Guatamala, Sumatra vs. Ethiopië en 'sundried' boontjes of niet?! We hadden zelfs een 'beoordelings vel' gemaakt, zodat je altijd kunt onthouden wat je favoriete smaken zijn. Hóe proef je nou koffie? *slurrrrrp-met-zoveel-mogelijk-geluid*! Er zijn een aantal verschillende manieren om koffie te zetten: de "French Press" (a.k.a de Cafetière), de "Pour Over" (a.k.a. de ouderwetse filterkoffie) en de Clover. Oi, we waren echt benieuwd naar koffie uit dit moderne monster! De Clover is namelijk een magische koffiemachine en bereidt koffie 21e-eeuw-stijl. Ik heb geleerd dat ik een Guatamala Clover-meisje ben… Weet ik dat ook weer wanneer ik nieuwe bonen voor mijn machine thuis haal! Het allerleukste (en meest interessant ook) was het combineren van koffie met bepaald soorten eten: grapefruit heeft zo'n sterk effect! Zul niet misschien niet verwachten, maar het maakt de bepaalde koffie veel 'zachter'! Hetzelfde geldt voor bepaalde koffie & brie, een verrassend lekkere combinatie. Eigenlijk is het net zoals wijn & het combineren met eten! Spannond dus…
Wist je dat… Starbucks is begonnen als koffiebranderij en bonen leverden aan verschillende bedrijven?! Al meer dan 40 jaar is dat de basis en daarna zijn ze pas de espressodrankjes gaan verkopen in het concept wat wij nu kennen. En wist je dat Starbucks The Bank verschillende evenementen organiseert?! Op vrijdagavonden zijn er bijvoorbeeld optredens van nieuwe bandjes/ artiesten. En koffie tastings natuurlijk, waar je je gewoon met een groepje voor kunt opgeven!
Lieve Jeroen en Laurie: dank jullie wel voor deze enorm leuke, leerzame en lekker rondleiding & tasting! We hebben zeker nieuwe dingen geleerd en wat was het cool om te doen!

Sunday morning glory! What a turns a goodmorning into a great morning? Yes, that's right: coffee. And even better: a coffee tasting! Sunday February 3 gave 10 selected coffee-lovin' Elites a different view on coffee and Starbucks The Bank!
First things first: when a Yelp Elite is to be expected at an Elite Event Sunday mornings 11 AM, it's best that they ride in style… Uber (recently launched in The Netherlands) was so kind to play with us: We didn't tell the Elites where they needed to go that morning, they could order an exclusive Uber taxi, utter the Magic Word "Yelp" and the drivers knew where they needed to go. Can you imagine? You're being picked up at your house, you only know that there will be coffee involved, there's a super-de-luxe car (water, magazines, and free WiFi on board) that takes you there! And 1-2-3-, you're at Starbucks The Bank! Oh yes, we love to ride in style…
We started off with a tour; how much fun to learn about the history of coffee, to learn that the Dutch smuggled coffee plants in the 17th Century to grow coffee on their own (we naughty Dutchies), to hear about why it's called 'The Bank' (it used to be the vault of the bank ABN Amro that was previously located here), and their vision on using 'natural' elements for their interior & design; it gives this Starbucks a 'warm' atmosphere and it's just plainly gezellig! Perfect to sit here with your laptop, having coffee with friends, playing different boardgames (they store them in the cupboard downstairs), and leave your kids in the 'play area'. Also, did you know they organize several events on Friday nights here? They are mini-concerts from local bands & musicians! And they give truly interesting coffee tastings….
We were with a selected group and I honestly must say: we learnt that there is so much more to coffee than just grounded-beans-in-the-morning! Laurie told us about the influence of 'location' on the same type of bean; Kenya vs. Guatamala, Sumatra vs. Ethiopia, and 'sundried' beans or regular coffee beans? We could clearly taste the difference, and Yelp had made a special ranking sheet' so that you could make notes to remember which aromas you like. Speaking of tasting coffee: you need to slurrrrrrp the coffee, make as much sound as possible, and needless to say: we slurped away! Then, there are also various way to make your coffee: There's the "French Press" (a.k.a Cafetière), the "Pour Over" (a.k.a. the 'oldfashioned' way of making filtered coffee), and there is the Clover: a highly advanced, almost magical machine that brings out the best flavour in your coffee. There are only 2 of these machines in Europe and with pride we can say: we have it here in Amsterdam!
