It's a familiar refrain, and one you hear from many a Californian on the East Coast: "There is no good Mexican food in NYC." While this New Yorker definitely disputes that notion overall, a true California burrito is definitely tough to find around here. But last night, thanks to the brothers behind Calexico, no one had anything but amazing things to say about the Brooklyn Mexican scene! A few years ago, these guys started cooking their family recipes and serving out of a cart; as a result of determination, excellent service, and straight-up quality food, they are now open in multiple locations and bringing excellent California Mexican (and crack sauce) to the masses. Last night, they invited the best of Brooklyn Yelp out for an evening of deliciousness. Read on for the glowing reviews, more photos, and a recap of all the fun!
If we only had a few words to describe last night, we'd take Ingrid S's: "Ridiculously awesome event." The food was all fantastic, but her personal favorite taco was "the Baja fried fish taco with fresh spicy slaw, vibrant yellow mango salsa chunks, and slathered with a dabble of their aforementioned 'crack' sauce. The mushroom and carne asada quesadillas were also incredibly delicious." Really, there wasn't a bad bite all night!
With beer flowing from Sixpoint and Negra Modelo, we already had plenty to wash down those wings. But it was an evening of excess, and Calexico's bar program didn't disappoint! As Stephanie A reports, "the drinks were definitely unique and tasty. I tried the Jalapeño Margarita and the Night Owl both were amazing."
For those of you who are down with Passover poetry, Jenna L said it best: "For me it was regular ol' dayenu at Calexico-
If they had only given the superb guac and chips, it would have been enough.
If they had only given the tender and spicy wings, it would have been enough.
If they had only given the sweet ass margaritas and night owls, it would have been enough.
If they had only given the perfectly cooked quesadilla with that sweet ass crack sauce, it would have been enough."
However, they did it all and more! A huge thanks to Dave, Brian, Jesse, Pete, Amanda, and all the other amazingly friendly members of the Calexico staff that we (the royal 'we') are forgetting right now because we had a few too many margaritas. They really know how to throw a party, and I know Rachel K speaks for a lot of us when she says "I can't wait to go back and sample the rest of the menu!" Check out those reviews, all the photos, and I'll see you over there soon!
