7 Spots to Celebrate Women’s History Month Across the U.S.

This March, we celebrate women who have marched before us! 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the constitutional right to vote.

Cities across the country have found distinctive ways to celebrate this centennial. From suffrage exhibits to photography contests to National Parks, we’re here to help you discover the history awaiting you in your backyard!

This upstate New York haven is known for its historical relevance in the suffrage movement. Notable social reformer Susan B. Anthony is laid to rest in the city’s sprawling Mount Hope Cemetery, and her residency of 40 years has been turned into a National Historic Landmark, the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House. Of note: the city celebrates her 200th birthday is this year!

Louisville’s arts and culture scene is *tripling* down on centennial celebrations! Stage One Family Theatre commissioned a play called Lawbreakers: A Fast and Furious History of Women’s Suffrage, while the Frazier History Museum coordinates with 100+ community partners on a wide array of “Women Vote 100” programming. Special bonus? A submission-based exhibition of photography at the Mohammed Ali Center. 

Atlanta, GA looks forward to celebrating at The Atlanta History Center. The “Any Great Change: The Centennial of the 29th Amendment” exhibit looks to shine a light on obstacles women have faced in gaining access to the political process historically, with a special focus on Georgia women and their role in making great change.

The Indianapolis Propylaeum is a historic mansion founded in 1888 by Mary Wright Sewall. With a mission of uplifting and connecting women leaders around the world, the mansion now hosts events and tours year round. Events in March include a St. Patrick’s Day Suffragist March and a performance of Digging in Her Heels.

In the heart of Central New York, the city of Syracuse boasts two major sites recognizing their significance in the women’s movement: The National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Women’s Rights National Historical Park. The National Park can be visited completely free of charge, and both place a special emphasis on accessibility for all. Grab a tour of both for an educational addition to your stop in Cuse!

Unsurprisingly, DC has a packed schedule of celebrations throughout the month of March and beyond! The National Archives and Records Administration, home of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, has hosted Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote since May of last year. This can’t miss experience runs through January, 2021.

OKC-based artist Marilyn Artus is taking her commemorative project, Her Flag, on the road! The final product? A sewn 18 x 26 foot flag commemorating the 36 original states that ratified the 19th Amendment into law.  Follow along on her journey and see if Her Flag is coming to your state!
