Hej, hallo, hallå, hei, halló. Craving lingonberries? We scavenged through Yelp to find some of the best Scandinavian spots in the USA. Bring Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland or the Faroe Islands to you by enjoying the culture in these six locations.
1. Pläj Scandinavian Restaurant & Bar: San Francisco, CA
“It could be the sophisticated dishes that come out of their kitchen that still manage to wow me over the years. Small plates that are meant to be shared, such as the smoked fish croquettes, taste of herring and beet cured gravlax, really showcase the amazing talent of the chefs with seafood.” – Yelp Elite Janice C
2. Nordic Museum: Seattle, WA
“I learned a lot about Nordic culture, both past and present. My favorite random facts: Thursday = Thor’s Day, fish shoes are a thing, and a good work ethic is essential to Nordic culture.” – Yelper Kimi P
3. Mikko: Washington D.C.
“What a great new place… food with a Nordic flair… They already have the food and service down-pat, as one would expect of a team that includes the former chef of the Ambassador of Finland to the US… The choice of pastries is overwhelming… They have beautiful and deliciously-famous cardamom buns and cinnamon rolls as Nordic choices…” – Yelper Charles N
4. Nordic Preserves Fish and Wildlife Company: New York, NY
“Truly a hidden gem in the lower east side… The sandwiches (my go-to being “the Nordic”) are absolutely incredible. Think your traditional bagel and lox, but instead of cream cheese, it’s crème fraîche, instead of the bagel, it’s a baguette, and instead of the capers, it’s a type of caviar.” – Yelper Mark Z
5. Scandinavian Specialties, Seattle, WA
“I was mightily impressed by the amount of Scandinavian goodness found within the four walls of this north Ballard landmark… they’ve used every square inch and filled it with everything from fresh Scandinavian groceries to clothing and gift items… Don’t miss the “hidden” book room full of cookbooks, travel books, and just about anything you could need to feel like you’ve made a trip to the motherland.” – Yelp Elite Jennifer J
6. Ironside Viking Tavern And Eatery: Franklin, IN
“I came to drink mead out of a horn. Who wouldn’t? They have some great mead selections and a great staff. The place has a very warm feel inside with decorations that you would expect out of a Viking-themed bar. The theme bleeds into the menu as well. Drinks, food and appetizers are themed without going overboard. I personally fell in love with the red cabbage.” – Yelper Karl M
