It’s mid-afternoon, and the flurry of dun activity from the morning has faded, but now you’re really starting to see the mayfly hatch kick into full force. You pull out your fly box and find it full of every kind of fuzz and feather you can imagine, from nymph stage to full spinner. Thanks to your local fly shop, you’re geared up with everything you need to match the hatch, and thanks to the sage advice from the owner, you know exactly when they’ll be biting.
Or maybe it’s morning, and you’re out on a Pacific pier chasing mackerel or a white seabass, or in the Gulf going after redfish or trying to finesse a panfish for dinner. You’ve checked in with the tackle shop for the latest report and they hooked you up with a hoochie squid or the live bait you’ll need to coax them onto the line.
Freshwater or saltwater, fly or spin, your local tackle shop is a veritable gold mind of gear. However, it’s not just lures and lines that make them so valuable, but also the passionate business owners and employees and the endless depths of knowledge about the local fishing holes.
To help you net more fish this summer (and support your local shop), we trolled through the Yelp data to find the top tackle shops across the US. Peruse this list, but don’t forget you can always search Yelp for “Hunting & Fishing Supplies” and “Fishing” to find all the gear, guides, and local waters.
Methodology: This is an all-time list of the best tackleshops in the U.S. according to Yelp. We identified businesses in the tackleshop category, then ranked those spots using a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews. We limited the number of businesses per state for geographic diversity. All businesses were marked open on Yelp as of May 26, 2021.
